If you wondered why I’m mostly boosting humorous takes on xz drama it’s because I find almost all serious takes absolutely nauseating. So much serious thinking by people who have never maintained anything of substance in their whole life.

colindean,
@colindean@mastodon.social avatar

@hynek @brainwane "just" used in that manner nearly always indicates a lack of understanding on the part of the speaker, or a disregard of the reasoning or concerns of the subject. To me, it indicates naive thought up to callous disregard. I've virtually eliminated "just" as a preposition from my vocabulary.

Fucking House. Can't support Ukraine fighting Russia, get aid to Gaza, deal with the border. But they waste time on the cynical political nihilism of banning TikTok, taking away the speech of countless millions of citizens not heard in old, white mass media. Fucking House.

@jeffjarvis esp. When it is pretty blatantly unconstitutional and the Senate realizes that so they probably won't even take it up. Bills of attainder have been unconstitutional for a very long time.

Regular reminder that even vast swathes of the US still have shitty internet connectivity:
“One of Wisconsin's most isolated places is finally getting fast internet”
https://www.wpr.org/one-wisconsins-most-isolated-places-finally-getting-fast-internet

Please consider this when choosing your framework, library, dependencies, third-party services, 9MB background images (looking at you, recent event), fonts, etc. Not everyone is using your high-end system, massive display, and fast connection.

colindean,
@colindean@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian heck, I would say step 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh and you hit areas with lots of people and little internet but the reality is that there are plenty of areas in the suburban area and even inside the city limits with a whole lot of people and not much connectivity. And just wait until the analysis comes out about where the money is going for the new broadband programs.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but

Discourse for discussions - any thoughts ? (See link for rationale)

colindean,
@colindean@mastodon.social avatar

@simonmic I'm not opposed to using Discourse but I need something to remind me to go check it because it's not a part of my general workflow. My days of being stupendously active on forums are largely in the past, almost entirely before Reddit became a thing.

I looked at my phone's screen time history for the last month. Most days have at least 20 minutes of screen-on-time for Baconreader, my client of choice. Many days have 40 minutes; a few have an hour.

That's a minimum of 20 minutes less time that I'll be using reddit daily starting tomorrow. I'd estimate the average to be around 30 minutes.

That's much less time spent consuming and producing and moderating.

In aggregate, how many people are like me, w/ a shuttered client?

Am I seemingly the ~only person on the Internet who wants a smoke detector with a black casing?

I can only find them from boutique, wired, high-end brands. Nest stopped making the Protect in black years ago, apparently. Owl sells them but my house doesn't have a wired smoke detector system; they're not required in .

So, in English, we tend to use "RIP" in many contexts to refer to someone deceased.

What is an equivalent for when someone's no longer with a company?

E.g.

"$person did this cool thing, but they're gone now, RIP"

but when they're still alive but no longer accessible in context

If you're like me and dislike how the macOS Sonoma SF font family looks, esp. on GitHub (Enterprise), consider using this helpful CSS user style sheet with a browser extension like Stylus:

.text-mono, .blob-code-inner, .input-monospace {
font-family: "Fira Code", "Source Code Pro", "Input Mono", "Jetbrains Mono", "Liberation Mono";
}

body, .markdown-body {
font-family: "Source Sans 3", "Source Sans", "Input Sans", "Open Sans", "Noto Sans";

This declaration from Governor Abbott feels like more than saber-rattling.

How long until there's a shootout between Texas Rangers and Feds?

The last time a state defied a Supreme Court decision, it really went poorly for the state. Arkansas defied Brown v. Board, and Eisenhower sent in federal troops when the state wouldn't guard against violent, racist protestors… and more actions I've forgotten since high school history class.
