“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world... But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art."

A fascinating article on Hollywood, the writers' strike, and the state of film and television. There are so many incredible quotes...

Just read a widely shared take down of a book by a person I'd never heard of and now kind of regret the whole experience :-(

@kissane I somehow missed the author's hatchet jobs at the time so perhaps this was due, but I felt kind of grubby reading it.

I'm not sure these are exactly the self-help books my dog needs, but still...

@kissane I don’t think you can entirely blame the publisher New Directions for this one. The book came out in 2022 and was chugging along nicely, and then Ann Patchett raved about it on TikTok a couple months ago and turned it into a sensation. I’m not sure you can plan for that sort of thing! They’re a small press and the book is this weird hardcover format like a Golden Book — they can’t just do a quick and dirty print-on-demand reprint.

@kissane I know. It's really unfortunate. I think that's why she's with the lovely folks at New Directions now. (I gather the last reprint came and went at the end of last month so there may be a few copies out there, but if not the next reprint is due Jan 1).

LitHub reached out to Palestinian authors and writers to ask them to recommend their favourite works of Palestinian literature:

Another favourite from last month's post was the cover of THE LOVE OF SINGULAR MEN by Victor Heringer designed by Pablo Delcan for New Directions. I really like the combination of type and colour palette.

@ronanmcd Thanks so much Ronan -- I really appreciate it! I'm still finding my feet here. Hopefully there will be an "official" Casual Optimist account at some point in future!

I have a question: what is a good server for a / blog account? It would be a mix of automatic *and *manual posts. I personally defaulted to mastodon.social but is there somewhere else more appropriate for my website?
