Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Best Original Anime)

If there is one Anime to watch in 2024, it is Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End on Crunchyroll.

There is a reason why Frieren is given a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes & the anime has received a 9 out of 10 on the International Movie Database (IMDB).

What makes this show unique is the fact it takes place at the end of a legendary adventure, as the female elf protagonist (the latter is a rarity in anime) reflects on her experiences & memories during the decade-long journey with her closest companions.

The show is about love, regret, memories, moving forward, hatred & consequences of decisions. What I enjoyed about this anime is how each character had different perspectives—even hypocritical ones—& despite their flaws, they accomplished great things.

Another item I enjoyed about Frieren is that it is not another overpowered protagonist's show. While Frieren is powerful, she is also vulnerable (mismatches are the key to victory), as the show highlights during the numerous fantasy battles.

Many other characters in the show are fantastic, too, but it is best to discover that for yourself!

Although the show appears episodic at first, there is a clear destination in mind, & it is fun to watch Frieren & her new friends attempt to trek there on her journey.

Halo Season 2 Finale

I just finished watching the season 2 finale of Halo on Paramount Plus & the show did not disappoint! Unless you are a hardcore fan of the video games (if so, you will be disappointed by the “timeline” of certain events), the second season was thoroughly enjoyable & I hope Paramount considers a third season soon.

I will not post any spoilers, but let’s say the central theme of the finale was sacrifice & honor, which made this worth the wait.

Sadly, I do not know of any decent, live-action science fiction shows that are available to see (outside of Netflix of course), but I am a little sad that this season only featured eight episodes (I wanted ten!).

Atlas is a Netflix film featuring Jennifer Lopez in a military mech, which could either be awesome or awful (there is no in-between).

I will still watch it as it is science fiction, but I will not expect anything spectacular out of this film.

I could never get into Star Trek Discovery as the show came off as too dystopian for a Star Trek show (this is coming from someone who loved Deep Space Nine too!).

But for those who enjoy all things Trek, Paramount Plus will broadcast the final season & bring this series to a close.

Maybe I will binge watch the entire series when it ends. Maybe...

Last night I watched the #NFL #Superbowl and was very underwhelmed. :nfl:

1. I wanted the 49ers to win but thought the Chiefs would. And they did. And I was disappointed.

2. The game wasn't actually that exciting. I'm glad I didn't stay up all night to watch it.

3. Travis Kelce should have been benched for the rest of the game for being shouty-man in Andy Reid's face.

4. It was odd to see Usher sing half the words he was meant to in his weird medley of songs. Alicia Keys was great.

This is an older show that is currently playing on Disney Plus, but it is hilarious & is a classic comedy based on everyone’s favorite group of animals (with a twist).

Compromising four seasons, Dinosours follows the adventures of the Sinclair’s, who are a working class family trying to navigate through life amongst the normal (& sometimes abnormal) challenges of society.

It’s a slice of life comedy that will appeal to everyone, & one of the characters ironically resembles that of a former US President who shall not be named. 😂

Netflix Anime: Delicious in Dungeon

This is actually a hilarious anime by Netflix that asks the question: what do adventurers eat while in a dungeon‽

While some of the violence in the show may not be appropriate for children, the comedy in the show is top notch, especially considering the fact that the adventurers are under powered & lacking in funds.

The first three episodes have been hilarious so far, although I agree with the elf girl, that eating those monsters is not something to look forward to on the daily. 😂🤣😂

Here’s what I don’t understand about so many nerds: if you don’t like where a franchise going, why not spend your time with something else?

Personally, I’m done with Star Wars. If someone likes it, good for them—I wish you many more hours of enjoyment.

But what am I doing now that Star Wars is over for me? Well, I recently got into Glynn Stewart’s Starship Mage which blends magic with space exploration.

I’m also really loving Starfield and its big wide galaxy of possibilities.

And I’ve been re-visiting the Halo universe too.

Point is, if you like old Star Wars, there’s other stuff out there that scratches that itch.

86: A bittersweet SciFi Anime

I briefly mentioned 86 on @darnelltv (regarding killer robots), but 86 (which can be watched on Crunchyroll) is a diamond 💎 in the rough, whose story at best can be described as bittersweet.

The story has an “Eastern European” feel to it, & at first glance, it seems as if this is a misplaced drama where robot drones fight other robot drones from rival nations.

However, what is revealed is that the Republic of San Magnolia forced those born with colored hair to fight on the front lines against a hostile robot/cybernetic army (you will understand why I call it robot/cybernetic once you progress further through the series).

While the silver-haired citizens enjoy the highlights of life, their colored-haired former neighbors are dying awful deaths against a mechanical foe they know little about.

This is an emotionally disturbing anime, so I would not recommend children watching it (there is not much gore, but there is a lot of death in the show).

Racism & discrimination are significant themes of 86, but it does showcase a redemptive side that is revealed towards the end (you will like it).

If you are into serious, political SciFi war dramas, then this anime is definitely for you!

Foundation: The Last Empress

The Last Empress was a phenomenal episode whose theme ironically was imprisonment & executions.

I do like how Hober Mallow came in to save the day (pun not intended) & how the Empire was shown to be weak during a time of crisis.

The backstabbing by one Cleon against another was not surprising, although the look in Demerzel’s eyes reveals a startling truth: she is loyal to the first Cleon—& him alone.

That prison, in the end, brings up more questions, which makes me wonder if it was a prison for Demezel & if she has other minions like her around‽ Yes, she says she is the last machine, but that might not be true.

I was sad to see the monster meet its noble end. I wish the monster killed Day & then we could see the effects of another clone taking his place.

Great episode overall!
