Some people should not be allowed anywhere near networked computers. Just participated in some EU research project kick-off meeting…

I mentally crossed that threshold where I think, that every publicly funded project by law should be enforced to have at least one hire with 𝕒𝕝𝕝 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕔𝕖𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕗𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤¹ on the payroll with the sole role of managing the IT stuff.

¹: I don't care that having the certs doesn't mean, they're actually competent. I'd be perfectly contempt with some checklist checking button pusher who at least memorized by rote some "best practices" and does a 40% job. That'd still be better, than current affairs.

    @zoomar I don't think so. Rebooting a brain is akin to booting a mainframe: Takes a lot of time, is tedious.

    Pretty sure that waking from a coma is a brain reboot. And after restart it still takes a lot of time to reach full capacity.

    I wrote that library as part of my graduate thesis (over 12 years ago), and put it up on GitHub for my personal use.

    Today I get this issue filed:

    https://github.com/datenwolf/PyPhytron/issues/1

    I guess, I'll go with GPL-3, don't you all agree? If they'd just mentioned that it lacks a license I'd probably gone with one, but this feels kind of rude.

    Home fume hoods are amazing and more people should have them.

    You never know when, say, your toddler is gonna trip over her toy shopping cart and come crying to you saying she broke it.

    This is repair attempt 2 using AA-Bond F113 epoxy adhesive after the first try using Dymax 9309-SC peeled off (the thing is injection molded from a low surface energy thermoplastic, maybe polypropylene?)

    If this fails my next attempt will probably be hot air welding but I don't have any PP filler rod handy so I'd have to acquire some.

    Ethernet switch with a (optional) SCPI server listening on the management network, providing the ability to connect ngscopeclient and do eye scan, bathtub curve, and PRBS BER measurements of any SERDES-based link (QSGMII / SFP+)... good idea?

    This would be a purely diagnostic interface and have no ability to view or modify any link settings.

    datenwolf,
    @datenwolf@chaos.social avatar

    @azonenberg With, or without VXI/LXI transport protocol support? SCPI over raw TCP/IP sockets is absurdly annoying in properly dealing with error conditions and recovery from partial transfers.

    (my personal experience with this stems from implementing protocol handlers for both sides of the connection)

    @jacqueline @gsuberland believe me, or not, but: memory safety is more related to thread safety, reentrancy and concurrency, than security. The security benefits are ancillary, but if the problem is a logic bug, it doesn't help much.

    Periodic reminder to compiler writers: If at any point you consider "build the largest armor piercing incendiary footgun you can" to be a reasonable way to handle possibly undefind input, think again.

    IMO the only proper response to a compiler encountering obvious UB is to throw a warning.

    In other news, it seems that while casting from signed int to unsigned int in C++ is well defined (underflowing like you'd expect), and casting from float to signed int is well defined...

    Casting from float to unsigned, if the floating point value may be negative, is UB. At least x86-64 gcc will underflow, while clang on ARM will saturate all negative values to zero.

    Doing a two-step cast, float to signed int to unsigned int, is well defined.

    float foo;
    uint32_t bar = foo;

    If foo cannot be proven at compile time to be positive IMO this should generate a warning.

    datenwolf,
    @datenwolf@chaos.social avatar

    @azonenberg ↑↑↑This↑↑↑

    So much, this. I'm perfectly okay with the as-if rules, the optimization venues possible. But dear compiler (devs), please: Just tell me if you can detect that UB is happening. I'll gladly fix mix code. But first I've to become aware that there is a problem, in the first place.
