I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.
A journey of the Soul in an ancient Greek ritual manual:
"Draw in breath from the rays and you will see yourself being lifted up and ascending to the height so that you seem to be in midair:
And you will see all immortal things."
From the "Mysteries of Helios-Mithras" in a 4th century magical papyrus
“I have a relationship with the 25th century more than I have a relationship with the 21st century,” he says. “I don't really care what people in our time and place think of me. I really care about what the 25th century thinks.”

I take it that the off-putting aspect is primarily that the relationship in question is very unequal and resembles an "ordinary" May-December?
I can think of stories about partners that are fairly equal in terms of maturity but where one will outlive the other by centuries. To be specific, I am thinking mostly of Spice & Wolf, since I read the first book in the series recently. I watched the anime some years ago.
I’ve been going out of my way lately to find unique mechanics, UI’s, etc. that fundamentally alter and improve a game, to the extent that their removal would severely hurt the game and make it less effective/impactful/etc. To be clear this is less “unplayable,” so not something silly like “removing the right thumb...
I'm not sure if I posted this before (or if I even read it all when I bookmarked it) but I just took a few minutes to go through it carefully (it's LONG) but it's good. I know a lot of people are burned out by the AI crap (I pretty much am) but this really gives a good rundown on the history, the sci-fi and the future. Man, these dudes seriously wanna live forever (but WHY? Have they ever seen a vampire movie??) Anyway. It's a great long read if you have time.

OC What unique mechanics have you seen lately that “made the game”?

Would you transfer your consciousness to a robot for immortality?
I wouldn't. Immortality sounds miserable to me.
