I used to be over there, now I'm over here. I like aviation and dance music and cricket and brutalist architecture and cheese among other things.

Is everyone talking about Linux elsewhere too, or is it just in this more geekier of social media nooks?

essjax,
@essjax@essjax.com avatar

@jonoabroad yeah, I wonder if normies are talking about it ๐Ÿ˜

essjax,
@essjax@essjax.com avatar

@jonoabroad I love being able to tinker with Linux stuff, but I'm a geek with some spare time, a bit of spare cash, a tech-adjacent business of my own and - decades ago - a kind uncle who would donate old computers and advice in my direction.

Linux on the home desktop is probably easier than it's ever been, but it's not fair to be telling normal folk that's what they should be doing.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr I live in the Bay of Plenty, Aotearoa New Zealand. I've been here for 20 years, after leaving the UK. People who have never been here imagine a paradise of breathtaking landscapes, sparsely populated with wonderful people. And they'd be right.

Pros: the above. Also the sheer distance from the rest of the world.

Cons: recently, a coalition mess of a fascist government. We hope they fall apart and it looks like they might.
Also, the sheer distance from the rest of the world.

@RickiTarr lol yes. Sending stuff from here to anywhere else (including yourself) requires refinancing your house, if you are fortunate enough to have one.

@billbennett maybe we should consume the Internet in tablespoons rather than Terabytes. ๐Ÿค”

One of the saddest things about leaving Singapore for the U.S. is, not only does McDonalds suck they also donโ€™t have curry sauce. Which makes it impossible for me to eat nuggets

@skinnylatte I stopped in a McDonald's in San Francisco when I was tired and hungry and thought "ah this will be easy".

Everything tasted like it had been soaked in a chemical syrup. It was inedible.

Have you ever met someone who lies all the time, but doesn't seem to realize they are lying?

essjax,
@essjax@essjax.com avatar

@RickiTarr I knew a chap who was like this, but with every lie, he looked away, to the upper-left. Exactly the same tic, every time he lied. Which was a lot.

In retrospect he was probably unwell. At the time it was just super weird.

I did a good deed yesterday. Couple of hours later, got slammed with horrible covid symptoms. I know these two things aren't connected in any way but can't help the feeling that it's a big FU from the universe.

My nan had a saying "no good deed goes unpunished" ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ฉ

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

@RickiTarr somehow there was a rumour that I sold hard drugs. I didn't, but it conferred a long-standing cool status that was entirely unearned.

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.
