Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

Folks who squash their merges, I’m curious why you are making that trade-off. I’m guessing the pro argument is a cleaner merge graph?

The big argument against it for me is that you lose granularity for git bisect. I've often been able to narrow down breakage (sometimes long past the merge) due to individual commits in the merge. If I'd merged in a giant blob all I'd have had to go by is that giant blob. (1/2)

Operating •and• developing Mastodon on this budget is nothing short of amazing.

It’s also unsustainable and we should make sure we don’t just pay for our third party Mastodon clients but donate to the core project.

I’ve been testing Nova as a replacement for VSCode over the last few weeks. I like it a lot for its native feel but what’s quite sad is that the multi-cursor editing performance is much, much worse.

I was editing a 4000 line file with a cursor on each line and it’d take 5ish seconds for each key press to take effect. VSCode updated in maybe half a second. Noticeably slower than normal editing but still fine.

Bit unfortunate that the native app fared so much worse here 😞

I really need to start tracking the kilometres I put on my running shoes. Had some knee troubles after recent runs and now with new shoes they’re gone.

I noticed HealthFit has a field to track shoes and you can set a default 👍

I guess I’ll know when the time comes and it’ll vary by vendor and model but how many kilometres do you keep your shoes for fellow runners?

I don't usually write about upcoming events but I've kinda started this thought on our podcast Swift Package Indexing.

I struggle to see the use case for a headset beyond gaming, I don't think FaceTime is it. No one is that excited about calls, plus both ends would need it.

But I can see Apple starting with a gaming focused device that they’ll eventually iterate into mainstream AR glasses.

Really curious what the story will be if they announce a headset!

I’m very happy with the built in Mail app on macOS/iOS/iPadOS, been using them from the start and throughout. What am I missing that people hate on it so much?

“With the increased limit of the acceptance queue, and a patched version of wrk, we can now conclude that swift is a good competitor speed-wise as a web application server.

Memory wise it blows all the other technologies away, using only 2.5% of the amount of memory that the java implementation needs, and 10% of node-js.”

I had a hunch that I could take on tasks that I used to do with Python + matplotlib + Jupyter with Swift Charts + SwiftUI + Playgrounds instead. But I had no idea it’d be this nice and easy. Plus I find the default result better looking and I have much more control over everything around the chart, like labels, titles etc.

This will change everything for me when working with charts.

I wish they supported so I don't have to deal with this…

If federation allowed effectively “being on” Threads while actually using an account on any Mastodon instance that federates, you would bypass Meta’s monetisation (ads).

Why would Meta support this? I simply don’t see why they’d follow through with this, at least not in a way that would mean transparent interop.

If they do it at all they must have some play that prevents this. Not sure that banking on people just not doing it is it.

First time in >10 years that I'm using a desktop instead of a MacBook and there are number of little gotchas:

  • There's no desktop keyboard with touch id, backlight, inverted T cursor keys.
  • No trackpad in MBP trackpad position. It's silly but I keep pawing at my desk in front of the space bar. Turns out I've been using the trackpad a lot alongside the mouse. I don’t think I can put an external trackpad there.
  • MBPs have a built-in UPS.

Right, Foundation goes off the “Up Next” list. Barely finished S2E2, not even sure why I persisted.

I have no idea who these people are, what they are doing and why. And that’s having read the books. Shame, really 😞

30 hours into and it's great fun. It's not the most compelling story in the world but the graphics and the mechanics are great. An excellent space shooter, and native to the Mac to boot.

I'll be damned if Rockfish Games aren't looking into or even already working on Everspace for the Vision Pro. Feels like a no brainer. Surely Apple must be talking to them about it?

I almost burst in laughter at the vet’s as yet again my request to speak French slowly makes the speaker switch to English 🤣

And you have to believe me, the vet was not comfortable speaking English! In fact, I'd say his English was about on par with my French.

And yet, AND YET, he COULD NOT bring himself to speak French slowly.

This must be going on in a French brain: plus lentement, plus lentement, oops, here we are, this is slow French

Just can't do it! 🤣
