Very good long run this morning! I had to consciously slow down a few times to stay within my targeted heart rate, but i enjoyed neighborhoods I rarely run through...

I am still in a phase of my training where I don't quite believe I'll be able to run a marathon in 2 months.

Actually I feel the same about a half coming up a few weeks prior.

It's the pace + distance that's scary, not the distance alone. (Yes, I have pace expectations)

We've been snow free long enough for me to not welcome this "snow" fall today. (Looks like watered snow)

I had a 6k run planned but I think I won't do it. I'll pretend I need recovery. Yes, that's it.

I really enjoyed todas long run! It was soooo windy, though! Strong enough to affect my speed.

Question for :
How much do you know and care about vertical oscillation, ground contact time or stride length?

Screen shot of activity summary : 23km done in 2:19:57. Elevation: 169m Heart rate average: 134bpm Pace average: 6:05 min/km

Today starts off with a bracingly cold shower, yet again, because our new gas hot water heater apparently has a defective blower and the pressure switch gets stuck in the closed position. The new blower arrives this afternoon and hopefully resolves the issue.

If not, things become more complicated. This is part of a home warranty claim and you don’t have a choice in the plumbing company. There will be credible arguments that they are not competent. I hope we don’t get to that point.🤞

Indeed, they are very good for your health! (Mental and physical)
You'll find explanations here:
https://www.hubermanlab.com/topics/heat-exposure-and-cold-exposure-to-optimize-health

I almost always finish my showers with one minute of cold water. But for some reason, I'm not in Team Shorts... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@WTL @s1m0n4 @mlawton
It wakes me up real good! (And in a good way). It really is something the body can adapt to, surprisingly!

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@mlawton @WTL @s1m0n4
The most surprising fact was the fact that the water doesn't have to be that cold to have benefits. From memory, you have benefits with water at 16C (60F).

(Edited the autocorrect to make a better English sounding sentence)

@WTL @mlawton @s1m0n4
Hahaha very well described! And I'm glad you tried!

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@s1m0n4 @WTL @mlawton on the contrary, I find it more useful during winter time, as I acclimate much better to cold this way. I'm way less cold this way!

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL @s1m0n4 @mlawton the acclimation is long lasting. The use of cold showers a few times a week makes you better adapted all the time.

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL @s1m0n4 @mlawton hahaha that's true!
Maybe you need a sauna to be heat adapted in the summer, then! 🤣🤣

✅ long run
I still don't know how I feel about it... In many ways it ways great. But I was slower than previous long runs. At least I think so. My perception kept being way off my watch stats... not helping is the fact that I pressed stop, not pause, after 3.5km (to use a public bathroom, I wouldn't see another for a while) so I have to compute the stats.

Anyway, at least the weather was super running friendly! As you see, there is snow in the park, if you zoom and search for it... 😢🫠

Thursday: 141 seconds of plank, 7.1 km of (-14°C with a windchill of -24°C, w/h gusts to 38km/hr),picked up groceries, and walked home.

Cut my run short as the 4km loop I was planning on taking largely looked like smooth ice, so I went over the Adawe crossing into Strathcona Park, and did groceries.

Pop tarts were on sale, and we're going up to Algonquin park in less than two weeks… something to look forward to.

@WTL oh my god what a fantastic throw back!!!! Thank you, I very much needed that this morning!!!

Currently, outside, the rain and the winds are really strong in #Montreal ! With the huge temp drop announced (feels like will drop by more than 30C), and the possible snow on top on the rain (that will have turn into ice), I am really not sure if I can run tomorrow.

@WTL I might replace it with HIIT training, but again, if the conditions are really bad, it'll be hard to get to the gym.

It might end up being !

@WTL nice!
I wouldn't currently subscribe to it, but it's part of the bundle... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Absolutely gorgeous blue sky for today's run! So nice! The cold (felt like -23C when I started) was easily manageable.

My plan said 21km, but I underestimated my plan a bit and ended up doing 23km... oh well!!

A must read!! As the author Jennifer Saul concludes, bringing awareness to the tactic will lessen its effect.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@JustinLachance @EdwinG @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars
Yep. Same experience here, in Rosemont. I did everything I could to make sure it was a walkable neighborhood. Indispensable.

Although I laughed a bit at the item "gas station", as a measure for walking neighborhood... some habits are hard to remove!

All right, long run is done! My heart was not in it as much as other long runs, and my perceived pace was slow and heavy. But I'm glad to see the stats don't align with my perception. (I noticed it early on while running)

Nice cold winter morning (felt like -15C), with some winds sometimes surprising me!

@xahteiwi awesome!

Tell me, for walking, do you usually wear minimalist shoes?

fo,

@xahteiwi I don't know them... it would have explain the weird feeling when walking...

In any case, I'm glad you tried and you seem somewhat satisfied!
