I did a class today! So fun! Except for the one arm plank... are they kidding me??? Hahaha
It's a very welcome addition to my regular training and may help me tremendously to upgrade my fitness during winter.
(I can't see myself doing strides on a day like today, it's still too icy. No hill repeats either)

What's your favorite activity?

The amount of info-treasures in this article is tremendous!! A must-read in my opinion.

Wednesday: 150 seconds of plank, 30 pushups, followed by 10.6 km of (+2°C and misting). Figure I'd try some pushups to see how the should was feeling.

The run was a real slog. Dense, heavy snow, with a layer of slush under it. Sidewalks are an icy mess. I got splashed by two pickup trucks, once about 1km into the run and intentionally about 1 km from home. 🤬

was Inshouha’s Beam! - while I was running for a change, as I ran out of podcasts ~2km from home.

My personal triathlon was quite efficient. But it’s cold outside. Not CANADIAN cold, but 🥶… At -5 degrees Celsius I‘m no longer on Team Shorts. My cycling workouts were fascinating, because I managed to get my heart rate up to 160+ (uncomfortable but effective). More of that!

One thing I have to change, though: I have to get up a little earlier, because I need ~15 minutes to dry after cycling. I shouldn’t run with damp clothing…

@sebastianhahn haha I did a quick 5km this afternoon (which is unusual for me but wa soretty much necessary). I regretted my pants. I have waterproof hiking boots I can run in. My socks were dry but not my pants!!
I should learn lessons from @WTL ...

2 days of work after a 2 week break and I can't think of anything else than "when's the next time off"?

Just the possibility of a snow day tomorrow is unbearable.

Today was the first day back in school, after a 7 week ... break? And my stepson can back midday because he was not feeling good.

Where can I scream, please?

@WTL hahahaha awesome! Thanks for the laugh!

My didn't go as planned today. Temperature was -5°C and my old phone suddenly drained its battery at km 4. I really need a new one 😭!
So I went back, but with no music to keep me focused I stopped after 2ish km.
I must have run for about 6 km only.

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL @s1m0n4 only showing zones is one thing, but it's a feature of a bigger idea (workout tracking).
Would the HR indicator alone gain sufficient traction to make it worthwhile?

@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

I’ve been thinking a lot about this. Sometimes I don’t understand people and often times they don’t understand me. I take many things literally, I think about stuff in my own way. I love numbers and I have niche hobbies I’m very passionate about. I live inside my own head, I love written communication and I hate speaking on the phone (24/7 silent mode). I get easily anxious and suffer from anxiety disorder. This has been my whole life.

See where I’m getting at with this? In my anxiety I wonder if I could get to the bottom of it and figure out do I have a diagnose for autism. But I’d rather not, because I am somehow not comfortable with the whole idea as I have been only getting used to being a person with anxiety for the past couple of decades. Rather not add more labels for myself in vain.

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL @rolle
My take on diagnoses is that they are worth it only if helpful. For example, is a proper diagnosis gives access to helpful resources? Does it help understand some behaviours/thoughts but more importantly, does it suggest helpful advices to help the person's wellbeing?
If it's to be a label, then it can be ignored...

@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

That's weird. I ran for 40 minutes this morning but the Activity app on my only registered 4 minutes... first time it happened, and I can't explain it.
Auto pause and resume function is usually very solid, enough for me to not check every time. I also did not pause after 4 minutes. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This morning it felt like -18 Celsius, which meant layers and fewer people outside!

After that I did tabata squats.

fo, to running
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

Today's run was not like I expected! In the first kilometre or so, the sidewalk was icy and I almost went back home (ice = risk of injury). But then I found ways of hitting dry patches of concrete or asphalt, or salty roads.

But after 5-6km, my heartbeat went way up, with no pace or elevation change to justify it. I had planned for slow HR zone 2 run, but decided I didn't care and run cautiously but without looking at HR.

What can explain this? Anyone else experienced it?

I really like the Mastodon community, but the one thing that drives me a little nuts are the folks who post pre-scolding messages, “reminding” ppl to be considerate because someone’s “fitness journey” might be different than yours, or to remember that not everyone likes the holidays, etc.

Yes, some people are inconsiderate, rude, or even blatantly offensive in what they post.

But those folks will continue being inconsiderate, rude, or blatantly offensive despite the pre-scolding.

@SaschaFreud very well said.

I refrain myself sometimes from fear of doing it wrong. That's in part because of the phenomenon you describe.

I'm not a big fan of retrospective, but I'm still going to share this one bit:
1824 km of running this year!
One marathon, one half, 2 trail races and one interior (winter) 5km.
Very proud of what I accomplished in ! And very excited with what's ahead!

Might get rollerblades. Or a bike. Or a wetsuit. Anyone else considering the cross training to break up running monotony

@Smootasaurus I've started Pilates recently. Absolutely love it! I also want to incorporate HIIT but the end of the fall was too chaotic. Will try in the next weeks.

@notjustbikes I was walking on st Laurent in and noticed they started construction on what used to be a parking lot.
Great, more space for people!
It's not the first one I see happening downtown, you'd imagine that there would be cars everywhere due to the new "lack of parking". But it's usually the other way around from my observations. The parking around empties. I believe it's because the district lives on more local people instead of people who drive. There might be modal shift 1/2

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@vincentbiret do you know if the murals will still be visible after construction? It would be nice, if at all possible...

Just because it's Christmas isn't enough of an excuse to skip the workout because today is also Monday: 120 seconds of plank, 100 pushups, followed by 11.7 km of (0°C), and then 10 minutes of kettle bells.

This was my fastest 10+km run of the year, so clearly large amounts of turkey, mashed potatoes, and Belgian waffles are the secret of me running quickly. Well, that and running out of podcasts and switching over to a Daft Punk concert.

Lol you know how good government tools are when your co-workers praise Microsoft Teams as being the only thing that always works

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@stephanie this is... too much... my hatred of MS Teams knows no limits. I have to restart my whole computer daily to receive messages. I have never used a shittier software and I just can't bare the thought of something more, even a government tool.

We're crying every now and then to use Slack, which is not good, hence about a gazillion times better than Teams.
I rely too much on the notification indicator in the Dock to use the web version.
I won't be there forever. One day, a beautiful day, I'll never use that ever ever again... one could hope!

My back is still not 💯 (the same issue seems to be affecting my lower back, left shoulder and neck), so gym is not an option this week, but my calf is back 💯 and I can run!
The teacher strike is messing up our routines and my running schedule (it's a fact, not an opinion); I've been going out much earlier than usual lately. I start by going north-west, than come back home toward south-east to see the sun rise and get that magnificent sunlight in my eyes!!

Walking path with trees each side, some lamp post and the sunrise on the horizon.
