Att'n.

Raise one for Roger Corman.

I loved his movies as a kid and later, when I went all cinephile and stuff, I loved them even more.

watched THE BATMAN again and it’s much better than i initially thought—pattinson is fine, kravitz fine, everyone else is excellent (dano as Riddler is wild, keoghan would’ve been a great Joker). way too fucking mopey, 30-45 minutes too fucking long…but a strong pass at a ‘dark knight detective’ movie. if it had any sense of fun at all it could’ve been great. but it does not, and is not.

freemancrouch,
@freemancrouch@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @waxbanks Hard agree. Sly, campy Batman was literally the best Batman, but I fear the current overlords of media trying to hit that tone again would be a disaster.

French cartoonist and writer George du Maurier was born in 1834.

He became a member of staff at the British satirical magazine Punch in 1865, drawing two cartoons a week. His deteriorating eyesight caused du Maurier to reduce his involvement with Punch in 1891 and settle in Hampstead, where he wrote three novels: Peter Ibbetson (1891); Trilby (1894) and The Marthian (posthumously in 1898) via @wikipedia

@ocornut @flockofnazguls A little additional historic background. About that time there was a big Japanese AI bubble with the government turning on the money faucets on "knowledge based" systems. This has got to be from that line of thinking.

I was an always-on watch wearer through my teen and early-adult yrs, even sleeping with it on. I gave up on wearing watches around 2005 prob, only starting again in 2021 with a smartwatch, which has been fantastic.

As tooted earlier, that watch died prematurely on Jan 1, so I've been resurrecting some old, (approaching vintage-status) watches that have sat gathering dust.

Remember 'Indiglo' the big new illumination thing in the '90s? I put in a battery and new band on this Timex.

Welp. This article is a tone-setting deal, characterizing AI's potentially murderous mistakes as wacky shenanigans, and not mentioning truly dangerous or exploitive use cases at all. Call me a humorless scold, , but this is not remotely good.

My God. What kind of disturbing, dark comedy science fiction novel are we living in.

Nazi billionaire is sputtering because can't get his chatbot software trained up to pump out the party line of lies: "Unfortunately the Internet (on which it is trained) is overrun with woke nonsense," sez Nazi billionaire.

Here's wishing continued confusion, dismay and humiliation to Nazi billionaire.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/12/23/grok-ai-elon-musk-x-woke-bias/

freemancrouch,
@freemancrouch@mastodon.social avatar

@hankg I'm hoping against hope that the technical limits of training up a large neural net is just completely incompatible with the ever shifting, grudge-du-jour ad hockery that is the right wing "belief system." I don't know enough of the last 20 years of AI to make an informed call on that angle.

My sense of wingnut human nature, though, is that there will never be a Nazi chatbot that doesn't spout rank heresy to someone; fomenting schisms is one of their big hobbies.

freemancrouch,
@freemancrouch@mastodon.social avatar

@goatsarah @hankg Some will, some individuals absolutely will, and do. But some of this is a perfect storm of organizations and institutions -- think tanks, media companies, PACs and what have you, that must justify their existence. I'm pessimistic about them getting beaten back, say, to where they were in 1960.
