Words for hire. Canadian, so… funny-ish? West Coast. Foodie. Oxford commas are a hill I’ll die on. Traveller. Anti-Nazi, pro-science.

In 2015, I sold everything to travel the world for over 4 years. I stopped 3 months before the pandemic. 25 countries in the Before Times? Worth it.

I share photography, tasty things, & cooking tips. I'm also political, left-leaning. Victoria, Canada.

And I swear. A lot.

I am only allowed “soft meat” until week four of my recovery, so I’m going back in time to a neglected budget-friendly masterpiece meal of the 1970s:

The Salisbury Steak.

Meaty, rich, glorious. Won’t break the bank.

Great with potatoes, rice, polenta — and freezes very well too, which I’ll be doing.

While others saw the last night, I saw a Dementor.

(Didn’t see auroras last night? They’ll be out again tonight. Give it another try. This was the strongest geomagnetic storm since 2005. Don’t wait for the next one.)

My surgeon came in on his day off to check on all the people he saved yesterday, even though we are technically on another surgeon’s docket now.

What a great doctor. I’m so glad I decided to trust him.

He said my surgery was a great way to end his day. Apparently there was a band dangling off my ovary that trapped my bowel in it, one snip, and boop! Done.

Well, I've taken a mental health day. So far, I've accomplished nothing but a blog post and writing in my journal. My energy is low and I'm irritable. Best to just let things settle instead of trying to force myself to be creative.

@imtheq this sounds very mentally healthy. Now watch something good and relax.

@imtheq Canadian writer Robertson Davies once said something to the effect of

A writer ought not write until the thought of not writing becomes unbearable.

Maybe a couple weeks off would do you good.

@imtheq there ya go.

So, I had surgery.

All those food issues I’ve increasingly suffered over the last 3-4 years now appear to be the result of a bowel blockage caused by surgical scar tissue that has formed since 2017.

I nearly waited too long to investigate & I am so grateful my surgeon pressured me to let him do surgery.

He operated laparoscopically and WAS DONE IN 45 MINUTES.

I lost 120 pounds trying to solve food-related issues, but if I had not, this quick surgery could not have been possible.

snarkysteff,
@snarkysteff@mastodon.online avatar

I got out of surgery 15 hours ago and have already walked 1500 steps & will take another stroll around the hospital floor shortly.

I’m on liquids, & if I do well handle it, then I may go home tomorrow.

Folks, if you have been on an ever-increasing list of foods giving you digestive hell & constipating you, read about SIBO.

If you’ve previously had abdominal surgery, it could be scar tissue making your life hell, & NO lifestyle changes will solve it! Investigate.

Bowel blockages can rupture and be fatal.

Don’t wait as long as I did.

I am counting my blessings today and feel like I’ve gotten a whole new life back.

And hey, losing 120 pounds trying to solve this shit is NOT time spent badly.

This will be the best summer I’ve had in years. (If we’re not smoked in by ridiculous fires.)

••

The prognosis is not the same for my roommate here, who came in with the same condition & now has a colostomy bag & a completely changed life for the worse.

You will likely need a strong stomach, but I think it is quite important that you read this piece: https://prospect.org/power/2024-04-24-my-dinner-with-andreessen/

@kittylyst andreessen could die in a horrible fire in the most gruesome way and I’d just shrug. The man is dangerous.

Hey, people, this is getting shared in my Facebook group and looks incredible. Apparently there are some dairy free suggestions too.

But ooh, it looks great.

@TheJen her cinnamon rolls are enormously popular. I can’t do dairy or much sugar so I’m not trying them yet. Maybe one day.

Turned out to be a lovely dinner, for someone who’s using groceries up and getting crafty.

Basmati cooked with orange juice, ras el hanout, & turkey stock, topped with hazelnuts, dates, herbs, orange zest, white pepper, & black pepper.

Homegrown greens with tomatoes, accompanied by a harissa-rubbed pork loin chop, & a splash of Greek yogurt.

Amazing Persian-style stuffed peppers. (Do not do 2 teaspoons of saffron! Just a pinch will do.)

I used Baharat spice blend instead of the combo they list — it’s essentially the same. Either will work.

I also used Michael Solomonov’s method of washing and soaking the rice, rather than cooking it beforehand.

I chose to soak the rice in 2L boiling water and I let it sit for 4 hours. With thicker bell pepper walls, I baked it for 75 minutes & it was perfect. https://jmoreliving.com/2019/02/13/persian-inspired-stuffed-peppers/

@jhv I can’t figure out what the mistake is. 2 pinches? 2 threads? None of those make sense. It’s so odd. A pinch is, what, $2-3? Maybe more? Crazy.
