<watches Disney force Andor to keep filming without writers during S2>

Well it's good to know we don't need to bother watching that show anymore, since S2 will be unsatisfying trash.

The fact that there is no current gen remake of Burnout 2, 3, or Split/Second is a crime against humanity. A crime against me, at least.

@AbandonedAmerica agreeed. every day without a modern (good) Burnout, Driver 3 or the 2005 NFS Most Wanted, we move further out of God's Grace.

Woooaaaah this is so cool!

I am SO INSPIRED to make a game with cute weird lil guys dressed like this. There's so many people shapes in here I've never even considered! (via @colossal) https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2023/04/frode-bolhuis-daily-sculpture/

I sat down thinking it would take another week to get AI going in , and I was half right?

First I spent another 4 days fixing increasingly tiny flaws in the networking because I hate leaving things unfinished, so then that was perfect, and

then I got AI working in 4 hours because excuse me what I just assign an AI controller and I'm done? What.

glassbottommeg,
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

Neat thing was it exposed an expected flaw: killing cute bird enemies feels bad.

So rather than moving on with making AI who can attack, first I pivot to: making AI birds that are fun to kill

is weird.

The secret is mostly, I think, in poofing the ragdoll before it comes to rest and your brain goes "that bird is very dead and lying there like a broken toy". We hit a similar thing in SkateBIRD and backed off and reworked the bails, but we lost something in the process. Here, I'm gonna see it through to a better conclusion.

I have two screens I use for work, a big 4k screen that's front and center, and a smallish 1080p screen that's off to the side. The small screen has only my work communications, always visible, because otherwise I'll miss them. Notifications are useless for me. Everything else goes on the big screen in front.

This is a new arrangement which puts most of my work in a position that's very good for my posture & has been doing wonders for clearing up my pain problems

@aeva get one of the spring arm monitor mounts? Then you can yank it over when you need it.

I hear a lot about reconnecting with old communities after moving over to but less about this being a huge moment for new communities to be formed

which is to say,

RISE UP, my fellow "eating a whole handful of cheese out the bag of shredded cheese while standing in the kitchen leaning over your nachos", our time is nigh!

Comparing "viral" threads on Masto vs Twitter, maybe the biggest difference is stuff just keeps going over here? It's neat but weird.

Twitter sorta murders posts after a few days unless they're truly mega viral, whereas Masto is just people's interests, and Masto is apparently full of Cheese Crew, who keep the cheese dream alive.

I really want Mastodon to be the next big thing, but it frankly has a culture problem that is going to kill its broader adoption. After quite a long time here, and a few days at Bluesky, the comparative experience looks like this:

Bluesky: "Everyone's posting about the latest weird inside joke, and I'm excited to post my weird twist on it!"

Mastodon: "Jokes offend me because I was born without a sense of humor. I demand that you wrap all levity in a content warning or I will FediBlock you."

glassbottommeg,
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

@artilectzed @arossp I guess in addition to the above great advice, I'd offer that Mastodon was really quiet until 6 months ago. From their perspective, it's like a freight train just ran through their wall and parked in their living room.

That's gonna take some time to settle out culturally. How much flak new folks get is already drastically different than what it was even 3 months ago. Likely because the people who are pissed just defederated from common landing instances, which I'd guess will keep happening.

Some of it may be new folks being rude, but some of it also may just be Mastodon regulars still reeling from their home exploding.

    Secrets of :

    The trick to inventing fun currency/etc names is just being confident/tired/old enough to throw out the silly nonsense word that feels good to say, that you maybe use already.

    Peckins, Numpums, Bippies, Slops, Boodles

    You use the same logic as when you're doing a SVU meme about what the kids are calling a drug, only you dead-ass put it in the design doc and see if you get called on it.

    Historical reference currency names blah, no, they're called Fippies, UI shorthand is FP, next question. Anything else is us retroactively justifying the silly name with increasingly tortured logic.

    @glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

    I have an mystery: what could make it so that a client logged into a server doesn't get their rotation replicated up to the ListenServer?

    Client can move around normally and see the rotation of the character the ListenServer is controlling, but viewed from the ListenServer, the client's character doesn't rotate. Move, yes, but no rotation.

    It's acting like rotation is only replicated server->client, and that's perplexing.

    glassbottommeg,
    @glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

    I can fix it by changing the character rot logic from being gated by "IsLocallyControlled" (which means it only runs on the client) to "LocalRole != SimulatedClient" (wherein the server's character will only update rot on the server, but the client's will do it on both)

    But WHY. That shouldn't be necessary. The rotation being applied to the character should already be replicating up to server (and then back down as necessary if you have more clients etc).

    glassbottommeg,
    @glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

    My best (only) theory is that somehow I have OTHER logic accidentally running on the server already, which is enforcing a neutral rotation, which then overrides any rotation being RPC'ed up from the client.

    Similarly, the problem resolves when I allow the rotation logic to run on the server because: then that rotation logic overrides whatever ELSE is running there, setting the bad value. Hrm.

    Rad. Looks like they're streamlining onboarding to the default -> move later once you know what that means, flow. Also sounds like quote toots and some degree of search is coming. That's all the major requests I've seen regularly, so, yay? Yay!

    Folks who want it to stay how it is: you can, the ability to use a fork is right there. Many already do. Presumably there will be opt in/out for all the search, doubt that'll even take a fork. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

    An angle I hadn't considered is, what if ChatGPT caused an ad-pocalypse and brings an end to this whole shit era of the Internet?

    It'd suck until a new model established itself, but wow I would not be sad to see that whole business model disappear into the sea. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-05-01/ai-chatbots-have-been-used-to-create-dozens-of-news-content-farms
