My neighbors bailed on their plant sale, put out a "free" sign, and I just got all these succulents! That table is ~3 feet in diameter.

I just inserted an editor's note into a document, and I was really tempted to put "Don't @ me" at the end.

We smelled gas in our house, so now the fire department is here in full gear with masks and oxygen, and they’re clearing the house.

They smell it too, so at least I don’t feel like I’m crazy. Much excitement!

We only smelled gas in the basement, but they wanted to inspect the whole house, and I swear there was a brief moment where I thought “My house is so messy, I’d rather die in a fire than have them traipse through my whole house!” I console myself that they’ve probably seen worse.

Any "Dune" fans here?

Tomorrow I'm interviewing big-time audiobook narrator Scott Brick, who narrates the "Dune" books, and Kevin J. Anderson who has written many "Dune" books.

Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask them (I'm especially interested in questions about the language of "Dune").

My jaw dropped.

I was sitting there with my mouth open after watching this Apple ad, and I can't remember something like that ever physically happening to me before. Just slow, building horror.

Old English had some beautiful and poetic compound words such as "heaven candle" for "sun."

Hana Videen of @OEWordhord and I talked about those and more in our interview about her new book about words for animals in medieval times, "The Deorhord."

I'm reviewing the video for Thursday's interview show with Eli Burnstein (another good one!), and it occurred to me that all these hours of watching video of myself are some kind of therapy.

I use to hate watching video of myself, but now I'm just like, this is what I look like, this is my personality, these are my weird mannerisms, and I'm OK with it.

Three style guides have put out guidance on how to cite AI, and they have a lot of interesting advice beyond just what should be italicized, and so on.

This might be an episode where you want to read the transcript or watch the YouTube video, though, if you actually do want to see the details of the citation styles. I've included examples of all three.

Draftsmith just released the results of a survey of ~500 language professionals on .

"The number of people who have little or no use for AI vastly outweigh the early adopters. Fear and cynicism outweigh the optimists."

"AI may be good for bringing low levels of language skill up to mediocre. But beating professionals at their own superpower is far harder."

Those were a couple of lines that jumped out at me. Find more at https://draftsmith.ai/blog/the-complex-truth-about-ai-and-language-professionals

My favorite bookstore in Reno is closing. I'm just gutted (and I don't even live there anymore).

It was a fabulous place and had been in business for 39 years. I did book signings there and everyone knew me. They don't say why they are closing. It may just be that the owner wants to retire, but it's such a loss for the community.

A foreign friend who is a translator asked if I know what the term "lazy sad" means.

I've never heard it, so I don't. A Google search makes me think it's just a song title.

Have any of you heard it being used outside of a song?

Does your inner "grammando" ever get the best of you? It happens to us all. 🤣

Hear more of Anne Curzan's delightful stories in this week's Grammar Girl podcast. We also talked about why Benjamin Franklin hated the word "colonize" and how having a laser focus on language led to Anne accidentally (and hilariously) asking her students an inappropriate question.

We communicate differently on different platforms. We talk differently on the phone than we talk in person, and we write texts differently than we write email messages.

To be a supercommunicator, you need to learn the rules of these different environments.

Earlier today, I learned an acquaintance's husband died suddenly last night. I hadn't met him, but he was very likely younger than I am.

And just now I learned that the beloved literary agent Janet Reid, who went by Query Shark (and who also didn't seem that old) has also died. What a sad day.

Shocking news today that Dictionary.com has laid off all its lexicographers.

I already had a line in next week's podcast about dictionaries being a tough industry, and now it's even more true.

Some great company should hire them all; they're a real dream team
