Hey @ivory:

Please add support for rendering basic Markdown in posts. Don’t need any fancy crap like tables; bold/italics/strikethrough would be plenty. (Maybe bulleted lists, if you’re feeling generous.)

I would be so very happy if you did this.

Nasty snow and slush conditions out there today. I’m here with my daughter at the dentist, less than two miles from our house, and we saw two accidents on the drive here.

Charlie's Law of Ruggedized Consumer Electronics: If it can survive an event that would kill the owner, you don't need to ruggedize it any further.

(This might be why phone manufacturers are now pushing towards foldable—hence fragile, easily broken—phone screens.)

I worked on capacitive touch sensor firmware for two years (although not for Apple devices), and you would not believe how hard it is to get them to read properly when wet. Distilled water is hard enough, but if there are some salts in it (i.e. most water), it’s a total nightmare to decipher what’s a real touch and what’s a ghost image due to capacitive coupling effects through the liquid.

Having said that: yeah, I totally agree with you. 😆

Dilbert Stark rediscovers human biology orthodoxy circa 1890 among fans of eugenics (long since debunked) ...

It's almost like he wants to breed H. G. Wellsian far future big-brained hominids and has no clue how evolution works.

So far I've managed to hold myself back from buying Xbox Skyrim during Video Game Sale Season, but last night I did pick up Firewatch and Dredge for the Switch.

@trixter I loved Firewatch. Such great world-building.

I am dumbfounded at the gamified sensory-overload consumerism hell that is Temu’s app/website. Nothing that they do is an actual scam, per we, but it is so incredibly manipulative and misleading that my mind boggles. They deluge you with an absolute tsunami of animations. They have you spin wheels/flip cards to get the “best” discount (you always will). They have you perform tasks that progress asymptotically: progress is SUPER fast to start, then crawls to a near stop when you near the end.

gregly,
@gregly@retro.pizza avatar

Also, a lot of their shoddy animations and graphics get cut off at the edges if your device doesn’t have the aspect ratio they expect (such as my iPad). Sometimes this makes buttons entirely inaccessible.

It is the epitome of “confuser capitalism” and I’m honestly impressed. The Chinese has figured out how to Do Capitalism so much better than America ever did. And yet we still pretend they’re a communist nation.

Very cool how Amazon is showing me Dragonball toys after I talked to my nephews about the series, definitely enjoying the surveillance-capitalism dystopia I live in.

gregly,
@gregly@retro.pizza avatar

@trixter I find it amusingly hypocritical of myself that, despite my utter hatred of surveillance capitalism, I am okay with the tradeoff of letting our Echo Dots vacuum up everything we say for the convenience of telling it to turn our lights on and off. 😅

Trans people are instrumental in fighting toxic masculinity.

Knowing and interacting with trans individuals has helped me to break down internalized toxic ideas of “this is how a man is supposed to act, what a man is supposed to do”. They’ve helped me be far more comfortable with who I am.

And I just want to say thank you for that.

Y'know, if you kick off the Colorado ballot that just sends a message that we don't really live in a free society wherein "free" specifically means privileged half-literate fascist sacks of shit have carte blanche to try to overthrow the constitution, end the republic and unperson and murder anyone they want with zero consequences or checks on their power as backed by roving goonsquads of murderous neo-Nazi yokels burning books and lynching people in town squares.

gregly,
@gregly@retro.pizza avatar

@GrimmReality Personally, I want to take the “real American” label away from then, and use it ourselves. “Real” Americans don’t support racist, sexist, fascist assholes.

WE are the real Americans. They are cowering toadies who need a daddy to suck up to.

@mhoye @foone @_L1vY_ Aside from retroactively creating the movie in question, one has to wonder about the ripple effects that would result from erasing the 11:30pm airing of an episode of “Hot Shots” on that day from history.

(Yes, I did look up the TV listings, I’m that much of a dork)

Hot take: replying to old posts is FINE.

Do you think your ancestors were all “oh man, I shouldn’t respond to this letter I got, it was written months ago?” Hell no. They kept the discourse going.

@GottaLaff A thought occurs: after seeing how Grok is doing, Musk is desperately trying to increase the number of racist/fascist/conspiracy-laden/fawning posts to train it on.

(That gives him way too much credit though.)

@mcc I have to say, though, I’m very disappointed that Bad Site has adopted some form of rich text (even if it is paid-only) and Mastodon has not. While I really like Cohost, I just can’t get into its style for some reason.

You know, if you’re basically sure you’re going to be in your house for the rest of your life, “building codes” really become “building suggestions”.

(This is a joke. Follow your local building codes. Unless they’re stupid.)

(That last line was also a joke.)

@TechConnectify Yeah, it’s the last 2023 here — would be a commuter car only though, we have a Scion xB for roadtrips. (It’s next in line for replacing, but it works well enough for now.)

Do any folks know if there’s a relatively safe replacement for a NiCd battery? Perhaps something that mounts the battery in a holder, so if it does leak, it is less likely to damage anything critical?

I know people often just keep their retro systems batteryless, but if possible I prefer to have something in there to retain settings when I’m not using it.
