This year, I have a goal of programming a software application every quarter (~13 weeks / 90 days).

My first completed application was a game in the game engine written in that is a rogue like game displayed in an emulated terminal emulator.

I learned a lot about Entity Component Systems, the benefit of design docs, and became a more knowledgeable ("better"?) programmer as a result.

I wrote about the project and my experience here:

Updating my resume for the first time in forever.

I want to be transparent about the fact that I've developed software in order to solve problems even though I've never been a software developer professionally.

Would it be crazy to include a section like this in my resume?

@NormanDunbar rt :)

Your profile mentions Toad. Is that the IDE? I got my employer to buy me a license of that when I was first cutting my teeth on SQL (on an Oracle 10 DB too).

That was the first time I experienced the joy of auto complete suggestions for column names - and my jaw dropped to the floor.

Really enjoying the 'now' section on my blog

https://popagandhi.com/now/

i prefer it to the 'week done' idea, though i may also start doing that for fun

@skinnylatte I do /now/ too but I like yours better for two reasons:

  1. it is a bit more about what you completed the past month which is more "Real" than mine which is forward looking

  2. you prepend your monthly updates so that you end up with a nice reverse-chronological story of your year

On my next monthly update, I might take inspiration from how you do it!

Early in my career as a marketing analyst I wrote a C# script, and then a desktop app, to compare and clean email lists from vendors using MD5 hashes - and I gave it away for free despite there being a small business opportunity.

Any programmers around here?

In my hashtag auto complete, 'rust' has ~250 posts this past week and 'rustlang' has ~160.

There may be a namespace collision happening with the former though, so for specificity you may want the latter. If you want reach, you may want the former.

I made a Dungeon Crawler Roguelike that you can play in your web browser1.

It isn't original though: as part of learning the Rust programming language, I followed the tutorial project in Hands-on Rust by @herberticus . I posted a recap on my blog2.

I'm very much looking forward to Herbert Wolverson's next book!

I've spent too much time trying to get Linux to work on a 14 year old laptop (Toshiba Satellite M645). I finally got it to work by using the acpi=off parameter in the Linux kernel boot command.

Now it is happily running Linux Mint XFCE and I've successfully repurposed the laptop and kept more e-waste from the dump, and more money in my pocket.

I wrote about my troubleshooting process here: https://www.isaacwyatt.com/posts/2024-01-12/

One of my RL friend groups on Discord has asked me to move coding conversations (which has ramped up due to the Advent of Code) to a Discord 'thread' which is where conversations go to die (in Discord).

They mostly prefer use Discord to post boomer memes anyway, so I should have known better.

I've chosen to do AoC in Rust, and without RegEx, and now I am wondering if I elected to do these in hard mode unnecessarily.

Some notes on cloning my voice using ElevenLabs, which turned out to be shockingly quick and easy: a single 10 minute audio sample was all it needed https://til.simonwillison.net/misc/voice-cloning

@simon Neat! Are you aware of any open source tools to generate my own synthesized voice on my own machine? I'm a bit skeptical about sharing my voice with a vendor.

@joonhyeok_ahn of course! A lot of folks also use with the plug-in to do their work. Yours is the first I've seen emacs mentioned as a PKM solution.

Really playing Super Metroid for the first time, I'm surprised at how good it is. It doesn't feel like a 30 year old game.

It manages to guide the player so well through level design, but still always requires and rewards thorough exploration.

So you have to really engage with the world, and that in turn makes the atmosphere so much stronger. (+ the awesome music)

Such good design, it must have been mind-blowing for people who played it back in 94

@iw@hachyderm.io avatar

@spinning_bird Did you finish it? It was only the second entry in the series after the original Metroid on NES and it was practically a launch title for the SNES. It is not without flaws, but it is a masterpiece of its era. It communicates SO MUCH without spelling it out for the player and will tug at your heart strings.
