    Syncing is fine, but I want to be in control of what is doing the syncing.

    I just watched a YouTube video where the host said "in the description" and "in the comments". I thought YouTubers legally had to add the word "below" any time they said those words. I wonder if they were fined.

    The same people who understand that it's a Bad Thing if they mess up the economy so the banks can't lend any money and nobody is investing in anything, and then merry go round stops... will scoff and dissemble when encountered by this kind of study.

    But this kind of "jump start" is less expensive, and probably more grounded in "sound economic reasoning" than your average bail out.

    @futurebird Similar success was seen by cities like Medicine Hat which simply provided free housing for the homeless population.

    While it's definitely still difficult to address the underlying issues that lead to homelessness and poverty, actually solving homelessness and poverty themselves isn't that hard for a rich nation like Canada to achieve.

    The departures board at Frankfurt airport includes high-speed trains as well.

    Everything marked as terminal T is a train departure from the train station that is directly connected to the airport. They have Lufthansa flight numbers too!

    I absolutely love this both because of the well-designed transit but also because I absolutely love split-flap displays!

    @notjustbikes

    That's such a shame. I find the sound can actually be really useful in a transit setting.

    I often find myself sitting somewhere with a less-than-ideal angle for viewing the board and a sound queue keeps me from obsessively craning my neck to look for updates every 30 seconds.

    It makes me angry to hear that Florida schoolchildren will be taught that enslaved Black people in the Americas benefitted from slavery by learning valuable skills.

    On. the. contrary.

    Skilled enslaved people were crucial to the development and running of colonial American industry.

    Enslaved experts provided techniques and technology from West Africa to create the American rice market.

    Enslaved experts built the indigo industry.

    This is an absolutely insane, immoral thing to teach kids.

    I suspect that these people wouldn't be okay with the equally stupid and incorrect claim that "9/11 was a good thing because it brought America together."

    So I downloaded a whole bunch of free or pay-what-you-want Game Boy games off itch.io for my Game Dad. They're all made with GB Studio (which is a free super-easy game-making program to make Game Boy games) and so far they're all pretty chill.

    A highlight is Analog Age Rainy Day, which has you playing as a kid trying to survive a rainy day; catch is it's 1984 so there's no phones or game boy or anything so you've gotta find ways to amuse yourself.

    A lovely benefit of using the Game Dad for Game Boy games is the ability to shift the palette so that it's red-on-black for playing in bed without giving me insomnia. It only works for Game Boy games though, not Game Boy Colour or Advance; I wish this were an option I could toggle in Retroarch for all my games.

    I'm getting into the idea of writing my own Game Boy game and I think I want to make it about a tiny smol officeboy/retailboy who gets laid off and joins a moving company to make a bit of quick cash, and finds that he loves using his body and feeling those aches and becoming stronk. And like this is possible now, it's very do-able to make a game that isn't about saving the world or whatever, doesn't have to have mass appeal enough to justify burning a bunch of ROMs and moulding a bunch of cartridges, you can chuck it up on the internet as easily as we could copy a tape game in a boombox thirty years ago and if ten people fall in love with it then Hooray.

    My ereader has lasted me ages and while it does have wifi, it's only for syncing books and articles from my calibre-web server.

    It's truly amazing how great a single-purpose device can be. Hyper-converged devices might be convenient, but they're also a big heap of compromises.

    Yeah, my wife took a look and was able to identify that the pages at the front are very old. I can get the details if people are interested.

    She's very knowledgeable in codicology but her academic focus is on pre-christian and early christianization in old norse literature.

    She doesn't know Armenian and I only learned a tiny bit when I was very young.

    jeffalyanak,
    @jeffalyanak@social.rights.ninja avatar

    @DontMindMe @medievodons

    It's been a while since she's looked at it—it's in an archival storage box with my father—but here's what my wife remembers about it:

    "I'm not sure of the exact animal the vellum is made from but probably cow or goat, the oldest leaves at the front and back could be sheep."

    "The oldest leaves I think are 11th century, the majority of the leaves look like 14th-16th century, I'd have to look at it again."

    "It's illuminated and the younger leaves may be 'uterine vellum' […] made from splitting a sheet of vellum to produce very thin leaves."
