John Mastodon doesn't want you to know this but even if your instance has a 500 character limit you can just upload a file and keep writing in the alt text

@archliberal on Android Chrome and Firefox I can click the image, long press it, and the alt-text pops up at the top of the box with the "save image" buttons and such

So, I'm thinking about the intermediate axis theorem and how it applies to ballistics and projectile behavior in a zero atmosphere, zero gravity environment.

Bows and crossbows could be interesting self-defense choices in such an environment because they wouldn't have to deal with the overheating issues of traditional firearms. But I'm wondering if those long, cylindrical projectiles would begin to tumble before striking their target.

Smart people of Mastodon, any thoughts?

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Legit_Spaghetti The intermediate axis theorem only applies to objects with three distinct moments of inertia. Anything with rotational symmetry only has two moments of inertia so the theorem won't apply

I think this means cylindrical projectiles would rotate stably about their axis, but I'm not sure. Things become complicated especially when you have a flexible body, see the tumbling of Explorer 1

    @archliberal I made the jump to an AMD GPU because it was hundreds of dollars less for the same performance (minus AI and raytracing ofc) back in 2022

    I had I think one or two driver crashes in the two years I've owned it on Windows and that's with overclocking, definitely worth it imo

    No problems on Linux but I don't do much gaming there

    @Slyence @archliberal my biggest thing is just being able to bump render resolution in VR. There are massive benefits in visual clarity with my setup until reaching about 2-3x 4k resolution

    If I really enjoyed Mass Effect 1-3, what’s another game I should grab that’s some sort of space epic?

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @gamingonlinux It's very different from Mass Effect but Outer Wilds (not to be confused with The Outer Worlds) is a first-person exploration/mystery game set in space. There is no combat, no inventory, and no levels - you progress the game purely by learning more about the world

    It's a space epic in a more Star Trek existentialist manner and it's my favorite game of all time

    If you decide to play it, don't look up anything about the game beforehand, the fun comes from discovery

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @gruifor I really wish I had good answer. Ever since playing Outer Wilds I've been looking for more like it without luck

    The best I've got is Subnautica - a survival crafting game where you explore an ocean planet. Good not great imho

    Other than that the best I've got is Riven, a puzzle game from 1998 which is admittedly extremely dated now. I'd only recommend it if you're a fan of the genre. It has a similar open-ended exploration game loop where progress can be made in different places

    tooters, what's your take on electric mopeds?

    In the same way that e-bikes are better suited for higher speeds and longer distances than electric scooters, electric mopeds seem like they could fill a currently empty niche, but I've never actually seen one here in Seattle

    Of course they require a license and insurance to drive, so that ups the cost, but are they something that we should push for?

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @david_megginson Lithium mining is obviously not great, but it's far less of a problem than climate change. We have to stop relying on fossil fuels for transit, both public and private, and electric batteries are currently the only viable option. They can also be recycled and of course it's a not a solution for everyone everywhere - nothing is

    I highly recommend this video looking at the lifecycle environmental costs of e-bikes

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW5b8_KBtT8

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @owen Totally agreed! I probably should've made this more clear but I was imagining these as on-road car replacements for people who need to travel a bit farther and faster than what e-bikes can provide. Not something that requires new infrastructure, but something that can use our existing car infrastructure in better ways

    And yeah I'm concerned about e-bike speed as well. Going over 520 when no one is around I push it to 25mph, but on the Burke or other bike lanes I try to stay under 15

    Workers in rich countries like the U.S. only have high wages ($8/hr is high) because they exploit workers in poor countries through outsourcing where they pay them $0.50/hr.

    vWorkers in rich countries aren't exploited, they're labor aristocrats.

    I hate it when I see police casually breaking traffic laws, and I’m not even talking about emergency responses. It just shows their frank contempt for actual public safety and their belief that they are above the law. Here is how to report reckless driving by police officers. It’s doubtful that there will be any meaningful consequences to any single report, but I think it’s a good idea to build a record of their infractions.

    The big pain point in development for me is the cycle of "make changes in the editor and-or the IDE/put on HMD/build project/fumble around for controllers/test/take off HMD/go back to editor."

    I'd be thrilled for a VR development environment that works in VR. Unreal Engine 4 had the option of using the editor in VR, but IIRC there was still a fair bit of jank in their system.

    Really all I need is passthrough so I can see my physical keyboard in VR. Huh. I wonder if I could build that...

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @NBAnthony2k @Legit_Spaghetti @archliberal phones are bad for gaming without a controller. The Vision Pro is trying to be a productivity device and it's definitely doing the best by far of anyone in the same space, but it isn't good for gaming by design
