Sketch Friday is here! I need to trace some of these. Been doing sketches and leaving the vectors to others, cheating myself of the Inkscape pleasures.
One of the downsides of easily managed color mixing using SASS in gtk was that none of it was accessible to app developers. Only a few @colors were avail. Few apps that needed to do some color customizations actually shipped the whole of adwaita SASS theme and regenerated their bits.
Such awful hacks are no longer necessary. I'm glad to see @alice ' amazing work on custom CSS properties landing. Thank you for the continuous care from the perspective of app developers!
@jimmac what’s with the “make apps not themes” and “make apps not extensions” hashtags? i thought people were against distros shipping unsupported themes by default (which is a reasonable concern) but are people against customization in general now?
@Seirdy I assume that the intention was to use #makeappsnotextensions here as well. That hashtag is neat because there are a lot of extensions that could in theory be apps instead. It doesn't necessarily mean that all extensions are bad, but an extension that e.g. just adds a popup to the top bar containing a pomodoro timer, could easily be an app instead, and consequently work across many desktops and GNOME versions.
@danirabbit@jimmac I don't think the spec being old is relevant, the problem is that there are barely any apps that don't have at least a few custom icons or non-semantic uses of existing icons.
There's just no way to swap out all icons at scale without a designer in the loop. It's the classic app/theme QA matrix that makes theming a bad idea elsewhere too :)

It's surprising to me (and yet it isn't) that this is so pervasive.
This line stood out to me:
"I don’t think there’s a deep reason for these, except for people just being sloppy.” I mean…
Typography is a deep study (to an average person), and some apps’ handling of type creates spaces after text even when you don't type a space. So strange.
Even Optical alignment features have their issues in most print design apps, like forever.
