One of my silliest hills that I will die on:

STS-31, the mission that deployed the Space Telescope, launched in 1990: April 24.

However, the astronauts didn't deploy the observatory until April 25.

My view -- which is not held by the good folks at STScI -- is that Hubble's birthday is thus the 25th; I liken it to April 24th is when Hubble's parents drove to the hospital / went into labor, but the 25th is when it was born.

Trying to not fly. Was going to take the train from Munich to Leiden tomorrow. This morning I get a message that tomorrow there’s going to be a strike. Changing to today is an absolute nightmare on the Bahn website and don’t get me started on the unmitigated disaster that is the app.

I’m enough to in for 15 years now, with a permanent position since 2016. My job is nothing less than my .

Still, today, after one week of , I’m NOT eager to go back to work. I know many people also feel the same after holidays, because their job is somehow painful. For the very first time to me, I’m like them.

I’m still extremely lucky to be in a group with talented young , for whom I want the best and do everything I can.

@apolitosb No Schadenfreude involved. I just find it indecent to mourn about « only » getting 1.6 billions while other people die in the streets of our countries because they have no shelter. We should be just grateful that our societies provide money for our activities.

Bad news for the habitability of Planet A: the second space race continues its growth, with 100 launches planned only by China this year. On top of this comes of course the even more important number of launches by the US. Reminder: for decades, the number of annual launches was between 50-100. But since a few years the sector has engaged into a perfectly looking exponential growth that is not environmentally sustainable.

@AlexSanterne @BassinesNon Je pense c’est surtout un choix individuel. Si la dissonance cognitive est trop pesante il vaut mieux partir. Sinon on peut toujours essayer de hacker le système par l’intérieur.

Has anyone estimated which environmental impact is larger: that of feeding cats with meat-based food, or that of cat owners posting pictures and videos of their cat on social networks? For the latter, a share from the launch of megaconstellations that are used to watch cat videos in the middle of nowhere should probably be included.

J'allume la radio 2mn en épluchant mes poireaux, je tombe sur une dame qui compare :

les 4 semaines où Macron se remuait les méninges sur sa permutation de ministres et mis en examen, et où elle était devant son téléphone à attendre des nouvelles

à... je vous le donne en mille ...

quelqu'un a qui on a diagnostiqué un cancer et qui attend les résultats des analyses en se faisant du souci. Ça apprend la patience, dit-elle.

Ces gens sont hors de l'humanité ordinaire.

@cnes La bonne nouvelle : ça a parlé plus de l’environnement et de la nécessité de changer de paradigm que de aujourd’hui, j’ai même l’impression que le thème environnemental était plus présent qu’il a deux ans où le fil rouge était pourtant l’environnement. Peut-être un signe positif des changements dans l’air (ou dans l’espace) ?
