A nomenclature of 'Blue Moon' almost never means a Moon of a blue color but with the summer nights, a literally blue appearing Moon, or Moon in the daytime is a fun one to spot. The northern hemisphere was showing off a bit before sunset, and with the May 23 full Moon so close I couldn't resist a few pictures. Aparna Venkatesan (University of San Francisco) and I wrote an op-ed for @spacedotcom today in which we argue that changes are coming, caused by humans, that risk "future generations' ability to practice scientific and cultural traditions on, near or in relation to the Moon."
These are some mountains and craters near the #lunar south pole casting shadows near the dividing line between night and day. The image was made at about 06:00 UTC on 24th February, just a few hours before the #Moon was full.
Close to the center of this image is the crater Malapert A, where the #Odysseus spacecraft has come to rest on its side. The pole itself is 300 km further away in the darkness.
The lander, named #Odysseus, was built by #IntuitiveMachines of Houston. Minutes after beginning its landing sequence at 6:11PM ET the spacecraft touched the ground, making it the first privately built spacecraft to land on the #lunar surface.
