Interestingly when I wrote a research piece about news satire and climate change one of the main finding was that when it came to the fundamentals of climate change the coverage of the subject was BETTER in news satire than in main stream journalism.

@jon @smveerman Iโ€™m reading this on board of one of those twice-a-day direct TGVs, on the Perpignan-Figueres high speed line, and looking at how crowded this off-season train is, I think that triple the capacity would still be profitable. Bring in the competition!

The Dutch high speed line. Where your train gets overtaken by cars on the motorway A4 next to it. Because there is a speed limit of 80 km/h due to construction errors ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿซ . And still need to pay a supplement for this service :omya_ns: .

Trotz Havarie gestern auf der LGV Est gestern bislang keinerlei Anzeichen, dass mein TGV ausfรคllig werden kรถnnte. Dann wollen wir doch mal guter Dinge sein, dass die heute auf der Streckenkarte geplanten Linien in der Normandie planmรครŸig erreicht werden kรถnnen. Aktuell aber noch in einem Corail-Wagen am anderen Ende der Grande Nationโ€ฆ

Der ursprรผngliche Plan war es, in CDG einen Flixbus nach Caen zu nehmen. Den hatte ich aber mit unserer Verspรคtung begraben. Stattdessen fand ich raus, dass praktischerweise der in der Nรคhe des Bahnhofs St-Lazare Endstation hat. So wurde es der
Stellte sich indes als eines der รผbelsten Bauernfรคngerangebote heraus, das ich je erlebt habe. 17 โ‚ฌ fรผr einen zugeklebten unbequemen RATP-Rumpelbus, der noch dazu kaum angeschrieben ist. (Nach "Disneyland" Ausschau halten!)

@jon Bercy is in a sorry state because the track layout beyond the station is utter garbage. Basically the current station has more capacity than what the station throat(s) can accommodate. Hence the decaying auto train platforms that couldn't be used for anything useful even if they were torn down.

There's a major โ‚ฌ150M+ project to improve the track layout, it's been studied for 10+ years. There are some reasons to be hopeful it'll actually happen someday ๐Ÿคž

Tip: even if youโ€™re only in Paris once in a while get a Navigo card. Machines to only recharge those have no queues!

@jon I can also recommend the Ile de France mobilitรฉs app. The installation process is a bit tedious, because you need to install an extra app to store the tickets, but once it's done it works well โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

And thanks for all the Navigo - app tips for Paris. Iโ€™ll keep boosting them, even though I donโ€™t need them - as 99% of the time Iโ€™m on a bike here

But the crux is this:
Paris is behind other cities in that contactless credit cards or phones canโ€™t be used directly
AND
hence you need a Navigo card, but once you have it everything is quite easy

Definitely abandon paper tickets!

Reaktivierung von Bahnstrecke nach Coevorden: Finanzierung steht

Die Reaktivierung der Bahnstrecke zwischen Neuenhaus (Landkreis Grafschaft Bentheim) und dem niederlรคndischen Coevorden fรผr den Personenverkehr kann beginnen. Der Bund hat zugesagt, 90 Prozent der Baukosten zu tragen, teilte das niedersรคchsische Verkehrsministerium mit. Das entspreche rund 22,7 Millionen Euro. Vorab hatte bereits das Land Niedersachsen weitere 2,2 Millionen Euro bestรคtigt.

  • ... mostly drive cars, which is typical of middle aged men
  • who make Besserwisser type of arguments, about how the ticket doesn't pay for itself, an argument typical of middle aged men

When the ticket benefits all sorts of people across the whole of society, most of whom are not middle aged men

@jon what drives me insane is that "paying for itself" is only applied to stuff that benefits the population at large, like education, healthcare and public transport.
Do the goverment employees salaries pay for themselves?
Does a standing army pay for itself?
Do roads pay for themselves?

No, they don't - they're the reason taxes exists.

Hat jemand Connections zum Verkehrsministerium? Ich mรถchte ein Solarauto bauen das pro 100 gefahrene Kilometer 5 Liter E-Fuel aus der Umgebungsluft synthetisiert. I'm trying to pay my Virginia income taxes online, and they have disabled paste in any field of consequence. Paste in a password? Nope. Your bank's routing number? You're gonna have to hand-key that. Your bank account number? You better believe you're typing that in.

If you wanted to force people to create crappy passwords and cause them to accidentally siphon money out of strangers' bank accounts, this is how you'd do it. And somebody went to extra effort to make it be like this!

I mainly cycle & use public transport. Today I was asked to drive a van & realised how incredibly easy it is to not cross advanced stop lines & enter the area reserved for waiting cyclists. Who knew?

Have I got special driving skills or is this something every driver can do?

Finally! Cracked the SNCF Connect reductions mess, thanks to @RensBloom

It makes no sense, but bear with me

  1. Put ALL your reduction cards in your profile in SNCF Connect - itโ€™ll look like Pic 1
  2. When you search it will tell you which reduction cards it is applying - orange circle on Pic 2
  3. Leave them ALL ticked, and it will NOT give me a reduction on a TER in Bourgogne-Franche-Comtรฉ (as Pic 3)
  4. Untick all except Bourgogne-Franche-Comtรฉ (as Pic 4) and I get the reduction

All the reduction cards ticked - this gives me NO reduction
Only the BFC card ticked - this DOES give me a reduction

@jon I just cancelled my freshly renewed Carte Avantage when I realised it's only valid on connections with a Saturday in between.
plus ouigo/tgv/ter... it's like you only get a reduction during an eclipse on Wednesdays but it's all in the footnotes.

Having been to the station in 2022 I can confirm these works will be simple and quick - pretty much everything is there already
