I'm a Kiwi writer, developmental editor & science nerd with a keen interest in internet security. My knowledge ranges from highly efficient ways to hide the bodies through to how to tear apart a manuscript and put it back together again. When I'm not writing, editing, or doing something for writing within the local community, I can be found plotting my next foray into mischief and scouting for locations to hide the bodies. (Shh... Don't tell anyone.) Follow my blog at judylmohr.com

It wasn't an easy decision, but I'm officially taking The Authenticity Initiative pledge. In today's , I've explained why I'm vowing to not use or any tool like it within my personal work. And I've explained why I won't edit it either.

@noellemitchell Cool! And depending on how you structure your notes, it will be a handy resource for you in the future.

I do a lot of things local and off the internet. It's not being old school. It's been practical.

D3: Do main characters need to be likeable?

For me, main characters don't need to be totally likeable, but we do need to sympathize with them & relate to them on some level. There has to be something about the character that intrigues us & makes us want to read about them. If we struggle to find something that makes us want to know what happens to this character, we will struggle to get into the story, and it will be a drag to read.

@Artemis201 You are 100% right, of course. There definitely needs to be some other quality with a main character that attracts the reader to them. If any character is 100% unlikable and unredeemable, then we'll just throw the book away. But that could also be the attraction bit. We want to see that character GO DOWN, so we read with fasination at how they continue to avoid capture.
