J.J. Abrams' Star Trek was released 15 years ago today!

Okay, it's not โ€œmyโ€ Trek and it's filled with more plot holes than there are hairs on a tribble, but I'd had a lot of fun in theater. And I don't care because it's an alternative timeline. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

And Michael Giacchino's score ๐Ÿฅฐ

kd8bxp,

@TheSpaceshipper Watched in 3D at the theater, liked the movie.
Even starting at the first episode of TOS, you could see the crew had a connection to each other, they worked together for a long time - they knew what each other was going to do. And a what a small nod or a wink means. And by extension the viewer had a connection. I did feel any connection with the crew of THIS Enterprise, they seemed like they were fighting each other, rather then helping each other.

The music was great!

kd8bxp, to 3DPrinting

Well, I think I've run out of ideas to get filament out of the hot end of a old 3D printer I have..... worse correct hot end cost more then the printer did when it was new. I might just try a different hot end, but it would be really nice to find one that at least has the mounting holes in the right place.

I am really thinking the printer has just become parts.

Maybe I can take a very small drill bit, and try to drill out the filament.

The printer is a Wanhao Powerspec i3 plus

kd8bxp,

@M0CUV someone else suggest acetone, and I'm not sure - but it is worth a try I just need to get some acetone and try it.

The solder sucker is a new idea for this problem thou ๐Ÿ™‚

If I had to choose a favorite arcade game soundtrack from the 1980s, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. It would be "Magical Sound Shower" from Sega's classic 1986 Out Run driving game.

Composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi using FM synth tech, it's such an uplifting tune. I love it, and it brings back childhood memories of spending more cash than I should have in order to race around in a Ferrari with a blonde bombshell sitting next to me. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

#RetroGaming #synth #arcade #gaming #chiptune #music #1980s

kd8bxp,

@metin @ooRay_creation Hands down - M.U.L.E. C64 and Master of the Lamps C64
but your picks are close! ๐Ÿ™‚

kd8bxp,

@metin @ooRay_creation I had a tape of M.U.L.E. I made set on loop, just something about it - I don't know what it was about that music but it was something, and I still get joy from it when I hear it.

I don't remember playing Monty on the Run until recently - but you are right the music is iconic, I know the music without having played.

Out Run arcade was one that always had a line at the arcade - another classic iconic game.

I think I must be going a little crazy..... I just heard a very distinctive dial up modem sound.... Maybe 9600 baud.
No radios are on....so it wasn't something sending packet or aprs.
But that's not the crazy part .... No one else in the room heard it, I was the only one.....

It wasnt loud, and didn't last very long. For the life of me I have no idea what would have made the sound...

#dialup #modem #aprs #packet #hamradio #ham

kd8bxp,

So I heard the noise again tonight....this time it was coming out of a game my grand daughter was playing. She said "yes I was playing the game the other day". To which I asked why didn't you tell me when I asked about the modem sound? Then I got the answer we all knew was coming...... "What's a modem sound, that's the lagging sound in Roblox"

Mystery solved. I just didn't know to ask the right question.

I just got a LinkedIn email encouraging me to congratulate some for a work anniversary. Someone who died two years ago.

kd8bxp,

@ianRobinson I recently got a notification from Telegram telling me a friend of mine just joined. Kind of freaked me out, he's been dead for 10+ years now.

Are there there any friendly modes for ?

That is, if I have a , an , or a , etc. are there any digital modes I can actually use with those systems given their extremely constrained system specs by modern standards?

kd8bxp,

@ai6yr @profoundlynerdy Here is another video from Radio Diรณgenes with a SSTV cart/modem which is interesting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=8cw_vx7SIOg

I'm sure anything with a serial port that you can connect a TNC too, and run terminal software on can do packet. Finding or making the right cables would be trick.

Went back to DVDs (on my PC), after one too many evenings dealing with advertising in the middle of free streamed movies. ("free" i.e. paid for by that advertising). Amazon Prime used to be not-so-bad, but it's terrible now. I forgot how awesome it is to NOT BE INTERRUPTED in the middle of key movie scenes. Borrowing them from the library, and buying some of the ones I'll watch multiple times from thrift stores/library sales.

kd8bxp,

@ai6yr I think DVDs are making a come back, and I think people are all starting to realize it at the nearly the same time.
I just hope the demand doesn't drive the prices up, it's so nice to go to the flea market and find a movie or two for a couple of dollars each.

There's a recent video by @canadiancivil about why people should join Mastodon and the Fediverse.

It takes a VERY different approach to other vids you may have seen.

It's, um... very straight-talking with some strong language ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and written by someone who found Mastodon too confusing. This is possibly video's strength though, as it may reach people that others cannot.

Anyway, see what you think, and if you know someone who might find it useful share it with them:

kd8bxp,

@feditips @paigesaunders While I enjoyed watching this take - I think you are posting to people who already (mostly) understand Mastodon/Federation/Fediverse - This video really needs to be trending on places like twitter and youtube - which I think may help some of the "fear" of change people have. That being said, I'm boosting - so I will add to more people who use mastodon seeing it ๐Ÿ™‚

@feditips Is there a quide somewhere that explains how peertube works? I have a few videos on diode zone, but I don't see any of them on your site. But I see other video from diode zone -? just curious I'm probably using the tags wrong or something.

You don't realize it until your normal desktop is Linux, but the Windows log in screen has become an advertisement for Microsoft products (ie if you click on the center of screen to type in your password, it now typically brings up your browser with some Microsoft ad). Still have a couple of Windows machine I have to use and it's very noticeable...

In case you missed it, you can make your entire posts searchable without using hashtags if you opt into the new full text search system. Here's how to do that:

โžก๏ธ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-opt-into-or-out-of-full-text-search-on-mastodon/

However, it's still worth using hashtags too because:

-Many people follow hashtags, using relevant tags in a post reaches them

-Many people aren't opting into full text search, so you can still find their posts with hashtag searches

-Hashtags are useful for indicating the topics you actively want to discuss

kd8bxp,

@dekkzz76 @feditips I just learned of this feature, so the question should be - how many others don't know and would use it if they did?

Just finished season 3,
It has turned into a real Star Trek show, episodic, but also an over arch story.
I also know it's a cartoon/animated - But the character arch of each of them - you just want to root for them. You want them to success.

I'm really digging this.

kd8bxp, to voyager

Reginald Barclay has to be one of the most tradic characters ever.
Addicted to holosuites, reverted to a spider, afraid of transporters, becomes the most advanced human ever (only to have that taken from him).
On the other side thou he did find a way to communicate with Voyager and other successes after he left The Enterprise. So maybe The Enterprise was the problem and not Barclay.

When I was a kid, I remember watching a cartoon that featured Bizarro World, a parallel universe in which the main characters met alternate versions of themselves but with opposite character traits.
Thing is, the inhabitants of Bizarro world referred to it as Bizarro World. If it truly was, then that would be normal for those people. Why ever would they call the place Bizarro World in that case?

kd8bxp,

@BorrisInABox everything was opposite - so "normal" would be "bizarro" --> Was that a Super Friends episode? I seem to remember a cartoon which featured Bizarro Superman, and Bizarro Batman but don't remember what it was.

kd8bxp,

@bryansmart @BorrisInABox That could be said for just about any loved childhood memory - like playing Atari 2600 games, just isn't fun.....but I loved that thing when I was a kid.
