My first book (an unconventional memoir about rebuilding, connection to the land, the past and to oneself) should be out next year!

We don't deserve flowers but I am so very grateful for them.

This didn't make it into the book but it sums up very well how I feel about things like the aurora (and drystone).

@CatHerder It felt the same way in person. And my kids were with me!

@hopeward right over our house!! How lucky! Could see it even with the light pollution

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@Alikat747 definitely! But this geomagnetic storm was so powerful that the aurora was seen as far south as Florida and the Bahamas!

Well, if this isn't one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen...

This stone isn't finished yet, but it felt particularly important to see it as it was being carved.

Urdu, the language of my grandfather, memorialised in Scottish sandstone. And somehow, within the words, within the stone his presence and his experiences memorialised too.

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@theappletree it's part of a public art project called Remembering Together. I came up with the concept but found a stone mason to do the lettering which requires so much skill. Just beautiful work.

First of the memory stones for Remembering Together Kinross has been completed by Douglas Stevens Stone. Here it is looking beautiful by evening window light.

'mindin, mair strang nor stane' is the Scots translation of 'memory, stronger than stone'.

Thanks to Ashley Douglas for the translation.

The season of the bees is upon us.

Quick portrait of my eldest daughter this evening as she checked on our hives.

@NormanDunbar Ah I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, it's a risk all beekeepers take. It's just our second year, so hopefully able to take some honey.

@Mactonex it's pretty manky close up 🤣

@jonasvautherin It's the insulation we keep on the hives over winter. Temperature just got consistently high enough in Scotland to remove it.

Craignavar Deserted Township, Glen Almond

Comprising the stone ruins of at least 22 rectangular buildings and a corn-drying kiln with associated stone-walled enclosures and fields, Craignavar was deserted in around 1820. It's unknown whether it was part of the forced Highland Clearances or just a voluntary departure due to economic reasons.

Prints, cards etc via the website: https://shiny.photo/photo/Craignavar-Deserted-Township--Glen-Almond-fe9cbc8eec03195d00819070de1f9cd6

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@xylophilist I'm also seeing on the image some signs of enclosures and possible structures I've never noticed on the ground.

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@xylophilist I've never used blender but hear good things. My daughter uses it for entirely different purposes (around 3D modelling for games) but this is a very cool image.

kristiedegaris,
@kristiedegaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@xylophilist In another lifetime I would love to be able to do this stuff. Will be on the lookout for those other structures next time I'm up there. We're up there all the time tbh, can't keep away. Some lovely pebbles along the river too, if you're into that kind of thing.
