This whole thread is 🤯. I’ve never seen anyone with a generalized view of my opinions on most productivity software.

Comtact and calendar apps are just shoddy transcriptions of how we managed that info on paper. They’ve not only barely changed since they were first ported over — they I’ve barely changed since a century before that.

We are held back by the representations of the work we are doing.

We need to rethink our tools, not just get “better” ones.

People actually thought dishes like “Avocado Jelly Waldorf with Mayonnaise” were decent and a good idea.

Beowulf is pretty wild, and I haven't even gotten to the fight with Grendel yet. Beowulf has just shown up and is like Hey this Grendel character? I'm gonna waste his ass for you. And then Unferth is like Pshaw! You can't even swim good, Bro! Breca totally crushed you in that swimming contest. And Beowulf is like Really? You want to go there? Sorry I was too busy slaying NINE sea monsters to worry about winning some stupid little race, and by the way I was swimming in full armor and carrying a sword, but you're welcome for the steep decline in sea monster attacks lately. Do you even slay, Bro? Oh wait l, what am I saying, if you were even halfway decent at slaying then I wouldn't have to come here with all my Geat bros to save your sorry ass! And Unferth just sits there in silence because what are you gonna say after having been so thoroughly owned?

@theropologist @clive if you love beowolf, I can’t recommend enough that you read The Mere Wife, especially if you are American. A modern retelling, and so good.

Q8. What's the most recent thing you bought/added to your bike? Or clothing, or any cycling related thing. Anything new or fun?

Went to a bar with a visiting scholar. The first three hours or so were fun. We had good food and nice whisky. Colleague was chatty and I enjoyed listening.

Then loud drunk people came in. I noticed I had hard time following my colleague's talk. The drunk people started to get on my nerves. I was also very conscious of my pinkish nails. Now that I've paid more attention to my bodily reactions, I noticed how anxious the change of the atmosphere made me.

Fortunately I had already checked my bus schedule and the colleague had said that I can just let him know whenever I have to leave. I said that it's getting loud, then explained I'm autistic and have auditory processing problems and that there would be a bus in 15 minutes. He said that we can leave right away. 💜 Once outside, it felt better again.

The older I get, the less I enjoy noisy bars. Or should I say the less I tolerate them. Never really liked them.

This detour into winamp-like Garmin watch faces did make me learn something bizarre. For a couple years starting in 1999, NCR - the people who make ATMs and cash registers - sponsored the development of XMMS, at the time the leading open-source Winamp-alike.

The dotcom boom was a weird time, wasn't it.

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@danderson @skinnylatte god I miss xmms. The last app that just played the music I wanted, when and how I wanted, and never made me angry at it.

The “Albums” app on iOS comes close, but it only does albums, nothing else. I sometimes do other stuff.

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@mathowie how does it handle the backlog in the timeline?

Like, with ivory it just tells me how many unread posts I have, and I… scroll. I would almost never use this feature, so I am struggling to understand what makes it so great.

"The iPad Pro doesn’t need to run macOS, but the answer to why an iPad Pro can’t do something a Mac can do, shouldn’t be to carry two kinds of computers with the same M-series chips, with the same RAM, with the same storage, and do different things on each.”

@alabut @marcoarment but they do not have the same hardware.

My camera sensor is dramatically larger than my phone’s. The glass is way larger, too.

And my (Fuji) cameras all have physical controls for the exposure triangle.

Very different.

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@alabut @marcoarment I will happily bet an annoying amount of money that you are wrong about all of this. Certainly you are for me.

I just spent a week in Arizona, and hated nearly every picture taken with my phone, yet had a wide reaction to my Fuji photos.

I also tried to capture the aurora on Saturday, and while it didn’t really show up, mt st Helens was great. Except for the photos taken with my phone.

Phones are great for brief reactions. But I will not give up my cameras.

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@alabut @marcoarment I agreed with you for a while. And there are definitely types of photo that the iPhone does really well.

But the more I look at photos side by side, and the more I try to capture what I see, the less I like the processing the iPhone does.

I love that it’s always there. And I know most people need nothing more than it.

But I think people will regret only relying on it.

@mph I object to the idea (in the linked post) that there are good calendar apps.

Note-taking is a million years ahead of calendaring. (Which makes sense, it is much easier.)

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@mph this is an unexpectedly cynical take.

I hear you on the industry side, and have no real commentary or opinions there - I have never liked the people who talk about tech.

But the Gruber view on demanding more from the iPad is shattering.

I’m just over having this device I love be so limited. I think it’s good that people are pushing Apple and demanding more. It’s been 15 years. None of the excuses for the walled garden stand any more.

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@mph “the best way to lose a leg is…”

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@mph cynical because it basically says, stop asking for more. Some of it is pessimism, but especially with how gruber is saying it, it is also a bit of “you don’t need it/deserve it/you’re lying and/or wrong”.

Like, if I stop demanding my tools get better, if I stop hoping and asking for the future to serve me better than the present, wtf am I even here for?

Yes, it has to get better in a way that’s not worse for others. But that’s the job. Always.

The iPad should not be a walled garden. Apple should no longer dictate the constraints on these devices.

After going camping a few times, I’ve decided that I would prefer to go camping with people who want to cook culturally relevant camping foods.

I can’t eat another hot dog or marshmallow. I just can’t (I’ve been watching Malaysian and Taiwanese and Chinese camping food videos. They are much more suitable)

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte I’ve been veg my whole life, but used to camp with people who brought sardines with them.

We cooked actual (but still western) food while camping. No hot dogs or smores.

I’ve never tasted sardines (or any other fish). But I so remember the smell from them decanting them at the camp fire.

So, they agreed with you, at least.

Mango season is coming. Here's my short S Asian mango primer, and some ideas on where to buy them (I'm only focused on the ones you can buy outside S Asia, so if you're like 'the type that drops in my grandma's garden in the Konkan coast is the best', great, keep some for me)

https://buttondown.email/skinnylatte/archive/mango-madness/

lkanies,
@lkanies@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte thanks!

That video of cutting mangoes, though… I know lots of people cut toward themselves, but it always scares me. And to use steel as a cutting board! 😬

I used to use that style of cutting (and then cut the peels of the chunks). But I’ve been using a peeler to get the skin off, then cutting the flesh off, and I like it much better. I lose less flesh because the peeler is so much better at, well, peeling.

I know this guy probably works a knife way better than I, though.
