Cool that we can regulate electric scooters into uselessness in cities but to digitally regulate the speed and parking behavior of cars (almost all of which come equipped with onboard GPS and electronics) is not something that’s even being discussed.

Instead carmakers put forward proposals to GPS tag school kids so that their cars might avoid them.

Scooter app notification about designated low-speed zones.
Scooter parking ban notification (“Sorry you can’t park here”) in app in an area where there are designated cluster areas.

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@alper well. A car can be town away resulting in the owner having to pay a lot, even if doesn’t work in 100% of the cases. The scooters are just there obstructing the walkways + pedestrians have no peace with people riding those things where they shouldn’t.

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@alper The question is: What does work in Berlin? 😂

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@alper Berlin is weird. My neighborhood in Hamburg you can only park your car if you are resident and even inside the neighborhood you can only park in the direct area of your address. All others need to pay. And the guys checking do come a lot even in the night (since it is a party area). I already saw many cars being towed in front of my house.

Unlike the E-Scooters: I can’t exit my house without first looking carefully, almost got hit many times by them.

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@alper Also they annoy exactly there, where people have already a lot of options. People living in areas far away who could really need better transportation don’t have them.

It’s not a meaningful way of making things better, it’s a very annoying business model.

This is the largest theft in the United States. The NYT reports that: OpenAI built a tool to transcribe YouTube videos to train its LLMs. Greg Brockman personally helped scrape the videos. OpenAI knew it was a legal gray area. Microsoft is funding this project. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/06/technology/tech-giants-harvest-data-artificial-intelligence.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ik0.RaCf.bqzjdn7Qj4Gg&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&ugrp=u&sgrp=c-cb

@nixCraft this whole AI story is an interesting phenomenon. Daron Acemoğlu and James A. Robinson point the laws protecting intellectual property on their works „Why Nation Fails: The Origin of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty“ as one of the key factors for the success of industrialized nations as the USA.

I wonder if this behavior will make people create less because at the end only big tech can make money out of intellectual property. We may be experiencing the downfall of capitalism right now.

So given it’s Saturday night, I thought I’d have a little fun with Kitten and make a tiny collaborative drawing toy.

You have a 20×20 grid and only black and white to draw with and everyone shares the same canvas.

https://draw-together.small-web.org

Have fun + looking forward to seeing what we all, umm, draw together.

PS. It took about 60 lines of code.

I’ve been in an Elder Scrolls tunnel for the last few weeks. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. My most played is still Daggerfall, probably between the original DOS version and the Unity engine. The best? There is no best; this is my absolute favorite game series of all time. They’re all perfect in their way. But this is about vibes; some days, I want Oblivion vibes, but others, I want Skyrim vibes.

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian I bought Skyrim some years ago without knowing what it was, I got a steel box edition for 20€. I started playing it and got obsessed really fast, specially with all the missions you randomly get by just walking thru the map, sometimes only listening to the NPCs complaining about shit is already funny. Skyrim has a vibe that is hard to reproduce by other open world games

Reddit is going public via the IPO route. Last year, the CEO got $193 million, but moderators are not paid and expected to work free past IPO. Only some moderators and active users in the USA can apply for Reddit's initial public offering to buy stock at a special price. Most Reddit users are motivated by fake karma points and likes. Also, they banned all unofficial Reddit mobile clients. Meanwhile, the CEO profits while everyone provides free labor.

You know what I absolutely despise? When you find a legal way to watch a movie, say on a streaming service you're already paying for, but for whatever reason the audio track and subtitles are only in German. Just this default assumption that if you're in Germany that's the only language you'll ever want.

Honest question: Let us say Apple is not charging anything for 3rd party app stores for the EU. Do you think app makers will charge less for apps in the EU? Do you think Spotify will pay extra to artists for all streaming done in the EU region? Discuss.

lontrachen,
@lontrachen@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I wonder if Spotify is a good example. I think the big players will get around everything, not matter what. They have the resources to build different apps for different continents. They will choose the options withe the best outcome for them.

Also Spotify doesn't care for the artists, they seek market dominance.
