Probably a few games too and a couple new basic computer science algorithms useful outside of gamedev.

Every iPad hardware announcement is a deep breath and then several months later at WWDC when software is announced that deep breath is used to blow a raspberry.
Will this be the year that it's used to say "Ta-da!" and show us something that makes use of all that power?
@lyonsinbeta Some of the most capable hardware money can buy... and it runs iOS so it's basically pure e-waste (due to the overkill).
"I have a compute device faster than your pro desktop from last year, with a better screen, and a 3D capable camera system" Cool, what can you do with it? "watch video mostly, sometimes draw a bit".
I want to make more time to write and draw but it's hard to have more than one hobby as a working parent. I'm getting a solid 45min of piano almost every day and I don't want to cut into that time to have three 15 minute hobbies. 🫤
@lyonsinbeta The struggle is real. My teenage niece has noticed she doesn’t have time to do everything she wants anymore. “I’m afraid that gets worse the older you get…”
I would love it if the iPad was like the Steam Deck: focused experience for most use cases with a real, general purpose OS underneath. Nothing about the Steam Deck or the iPad needs a goofy locked down OS. It's all UI/UX.
Valve knows you'll buy stuff on steam because it's a great experience so they let you do what you want. Apple is terrified you won't buy stuff in the app store because it's a lousy experience so they force you to do what they want.
I suspect some people in Apple agree with me since there are a bunch of app launch and window management options in macOS going back ages that let you use a Mac like an iPad.
Again, I get why a for-profit company isn't necessarily inclined to give me that device and OS but Valve has proved the concept works, and it works really really well.
@lyonsinbeta In general, I am less inclined to trust and value corporate things. And much more to trust community driven and community owned and community developed things.
I hate iPadOS. Some of the coolest hardware in my lifetime utterly ruined by a toy operating system. It’s an expensive kindle fire; as long as all you do is consume via blessed channels it’s great but the second you want to think different you’re screwed. 🤬🤬🤬
@mattwilcox it sucks. It sucks so much. I get that they don’t want me in the kernel but I’m not even asking for a true general purpose OS, just let me get to my own damn data. No normal person will do that. Normies will still use Apple Music and Apple Books. Exactly like we see on android.
@lyonsinbeta If you can get to your own data, Apple’s not selling you a service to get to use the data. If “other apps” can access files then they can’t engineer “solutions” to your problem you’ll pay for. Not that I’m cynical. But there’s got to be a business reason the very most fundamental parts of computing aren’t properly done. In fact; were removed (it’s based on OSX after all).
Why does a person shouting changes at a freelance artist they hired not consider themselves to be an artist, but that same person shouting changes into a generative art tool does?
Like... literally why? If they bark "make it pop more" into an email that goes to an artist or fat finger a prompt-word-salad into an app they still didn't do anything that anyone would call "making art."
@mattwilcox ok there is no accounting for the delusions of an individual. But most onlookers would not consider them an artist. And a way higher amount of people shouting at the machine consider themselves to be artists than people-shouters.
@lyonsinbeta Agreed. Lay people confuse having ideas with being skilled enough to execute them. Up the chain one level; dabblers confuse tools as skill.
Most people don’t confuse people as tools. So despite the “interface” being the same (tool/person do this idea) most people acknowledge the human is doing a thing they can’t. But people take ownership of a tool because they believe they’re controlling the tool. They aren’t. Not meaningfully. But there’s the divergence.
@imyke@viticci I recall one of you saying you'd switched from Screens to some other app for remote access to a Mac. Assuming I'm not misremembering, what is it?
