I have the wonderful privilege of giving interactive art museum tours to young kids. The other day I asked a quiet 2nd grader who was enthralled by a Dorothea Lange photo from the Great Depression what he thought was going on in the photo. His interpretation was thoughtful and perceptive. After praising his response he came back with “my grandma taught me to look for the secrets in art.” Yay for grandmothers!

New Year has always been accompanied by complex feelings for me. Time has always felt like it was moving too fast, even as a child, and New Year is a stark reminder that another year has come and gone.

A lot of people use this moment to think about how they'd like to change, New Year, New You, but inevitably we are still ourselves. In the end though, I'm the worst person of all, an Optimist. I really believe that things can and do get better, and in the case, of New Year, New You, maybe the old you is pretty good already, and you just did the best you could last year, and you're gonna do your best this year too.

Our time is short, weird, wonderful, heartbreaking, and fascinating. I'm here for it, and I'm incredibly lucky to have this group of people to chat with, empathize with, and learn from. I'm ringing in the New Year with gratitude.

Anyway, as usual that was verbose, but please, tell me your thoughts on the New Year, Anything you want to talk about is fine!

@RickiTarr I’ve been thinking about the significance of the New Year — I’m not a believer in resolutions either. As the years pile up, the numbers act as brackets… for a set of life experiences & memories that help us define our lives.

And certainly as we age the ever increasing speed of time passing is a daunting reminder of our mortality — I prefer thinking of the new year as a gentle nudge to be grateful that we are still here counting. Happy 2024!

I’ve been learning to make hand printed collagraphs. It takes some effort but the process is quite enjoyable and the results are getting better.

Hey coffee fedi, my aeropress has died again (plunger shrank, is weeping gross oil 🙃) and I kinda don’t want to keep making coffee in plastic, even when I’m traveling.

Does anyone have better, ideally non-plastic travel press recs from personal experience? Search results are hard to trust and I can find little french presses but they are so goopy and messy. (And I love you, pour over people, but I cannot deal with all that on the road.)
