NEW: Tumblr and Wordpress are preparing to sell user data to Midjourney and OpenAI, according to internal documentation we've reviewed

https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/

@404mediaco

Guessing:

  • First free sites on WordPress. Com
  • Then paid sites in WordPress. Com
  • Then WordPress hosted elsewhere with JetPack enabled.
  • Then integrated in WP core and one needs forking to avoid it.

Sure not a dumb question because these types of "transition-patterns" elsewhere justify caution.

I do think release-wise and considering current update upgrade schedules these things are known in advance, if they become a reality.

Open source helps in this case because proposed changes are transparant.

Of you are (like me) :

  • bound to use Windows (I am, employer wise)
  • BUT live outside of EU
  • AND want unbundling of your OS from Bing/Edge. ...

@kkarhan if you have the freedom to leave a job on this criteria consider yourself lucky!
I only came close to this when looking for a new employer and turned out after the first conversations they used 'Google Workspace' for collaboration. Ended the proces right away, Privilige tho to be able to choose and pick. ;)

Anyone know of a business that did felt welcome at the fediverse?

More insight / perspective here:
https://qoto.org/@volkris/111308037781865567

The scenario being:
A business getting its own instance on its own domain for webcare and news.

Specifically asking about commercial organisations:

  • not semi-public organisations because they are already present here.
  • not brands trying to register at other peoples instance which is foolish.

Anybody know if there is a way to 'change fediverse CMS without breaking anything AND to retain history'?

Doesnt exist I guess?

Context:

  • I'm searching for a way to move from Akkoma to Mastodon.
  • I selfhosted Akkoma with Yunohost but want to migrate to managed Mastodon.
  • I want to use the same (sub)domain.

Also I guess all those brands of fediverse servers need to have the same permalink structure to make this even realistic?

Besides often there is no easy export / import.

me,
@me@t.joeldebruijn.nl avatar

I'm very gratefull to the @yunohost community and running my own server finally is doable for me after a decade hiatus. But:

  • Instead of choosing a mainstream fediverse server I searched for one with a small footprint (Pleroma).
  • Instead of the main one I choose a fork (Akkoma).

Now my is buggy (I cant administer the backend and media attachments posts become impossible).

But this 'query' give 0 results:

  • Search for someone with fediverse system knowledge.
  • Within this group search for a Yunohost packager.
  • Within this group search for a Akkoma expert.
  • Within this group search for someone with time and means to resolve bugs and package upgrade.

Choosen and configuring a instance for my family, experience with hosting.de :

Requirements:

  • NextCloud partner
  • EU based
  • Managed nextcloud (I lack skills and time for security and maintenance OS, Database, Application etc)
  • Not just storage, but also contacts/calendering

Reviewed some of the offers and choose hosting.de (0,5 TB / E6,90)

Positive:

  • Pay per month, instead of paying for a full year like some Dutch hoster require.
  • Admin priviligers for users, apps and groups.
  • Interface immediately in Dutch
  • Serving from own domain in like 15 minutes and SSL in minutes.

Negative: None so far!

me,
@me@t.joeldebruijn.nl avatar

Found one negative thing tho ....

With hosting.de you cant set your credit card as regular payment option.
You know, like 'set and forget'.
They only accept creditcard to pay a pre-paid amount from which they balance invoices.

OK, SEPA it is ... My German is a bit rusty though ...

" Bitte beachten Sie:

I definitely going to use 'verifizierungscode' more because it just sounds cool.

@me@t.joeldebruijn.nl avatar

@RyunoKi
I searched for credit card in their FAQ but I forgot how national oriented they are so German it is. 😁

About brief and information (sometimes data) dense:

I used to have 2 to 3 introductory sentences to provide context and nuance for my actual point.

But it is perveived as monologue or long-winded. But how long winded is 30 s of speech anyway?

The effect being I get interrupted and the conversation deviates from the main topic adding stress because now I have like 3 mental notes to talk about instead of 1. And my actual point gets lost.

So I start with the actual point in a dense way but without context it often causes polarisation. Or I must repeat "Hence my opening statement ..."

Only way to get out of this catch 22 is to not say much but only ask sort of analytical questions, helping the other person arrive at the same conclusion as I do. If not also fine but its perceived as a meaningfull dialogue at least.

Yes, you can ditch #GoogleMaps now..

#OrganicMaps is here. Use it while offline and feel good about a #privacy-respecting app that doesn't suck you dry of your personal information. Based on #OpenStreetMap this app is gonna blow #Google #Maps out of the water (hopefully ;)

Brings back memories of my father when his mailprovider changed interface ....

Also he thought every popup or button asking for info was part of "the software" and those fields asking for personal info must be filled.

Dodged more phishing bullets then I can count.

If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?

Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

So it looks like home.social is going to shut down this year (see announcement below).

That’s a 36k user instance. Along with mastodon.lol recently, are mid-sized instances feeling the strain? Are they naturally unsustainable, at least without the right infrastructure.

I’m betting single admin mid-sized instances are unsustainable.

could easily have struggled to survive recently if it weren’t for its co-op org.

Also possible in parallel:

A zillion smaller instances looking very decentralized all on a few large scale hosters providing managed hosting.

Each them providing “added value” like relaying and semi-universal search etc …

@maegul @unattributed @nelliek @quadrivial @fediversenews
I hope masto.host can scale up further AND other hosters follow their example. ....

A bit like WordPress hosters, but maybe a bit more specialized because Mastodon instances are more complex to host/maintain.

Also don't think there is any hosting tooling to "just roll out a next update to 1000 instances at once".

me,
@me@t.joeldebruijn.nl avatar

@jan @maegul @unattributed @nelliek @quadrivial @fediversenews
Oh wow, hundred's already 👍💪💪

Do you masto-management-in-bulk so to say with scripts or something like that?

Or is there specialized "multi - instance" tooling?

Just curious as an amateur on a single user instance 😁

    The massive reduction wouldnt come until they not only replace Windows for Linux desktops but also Office applications for LibreOffice and Office365 for NextCloud and Azure for …

    And then there is also a chance finding hosting for all that isn’t even cheaper. Still the right thing to do.

    Easy to miss in Mastodon's latest update, but the most-requested features are indeed coming "soon:"

    "...quote posts, improved content and profile search, and groups. We’re also continuously working on improving content and profile discovery, onboarding, and of course our extensive set of moderation tools, as well as removing friction from decentralized features. Keep a lookout for these updates soon."

    I don’t care if Twitter has translation or not. In September 2022 I prepared my migration and began orientating on self hosting something Fediverse compatible. Settled in now without an active Twitter account.

    But if universal ubiquitous translation features were here that would certainly fulfill a need.

    Also translation of an “international” post doesn’t provide a local context and interpretation for a specific country. Used it many times in questions about GDPR, Cybersecurity and software suites for schools.

    me,
    @me@t.joeldebruijn.nl avatar

    @downey @TootUncommon I am not on Mastodon so I didn’t know that. Does it just label things according to language or does it provide translation as well?
