I'm always shocked by how expensive basic European experiences are in the US. One of my favorite things is high street shops. You have a bunch of stores with apartments above them, so you can always live within walking distance of basically everything. In the US they separate things into commercial and residential districts so you have to drive everywhere.

Areas that allow mixing residential and commercial buildings are so rare that supply & demand sends costs through the roof. In Europe living in an apartment above stores is a budget option for people who can't afford homes, in the US you basically have to be wealthy and often those apartments cost as much as an entire house.

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@malwaretech That;'s not really true outside of large urban areas. There are apartments above businesses in smaller towns, even in urban neighborhoods but especially in college towns

I think people fail to understand that being moved from a tenure-track position to an adjunct position is generally absolute academic career death for academics in the United States. It's that serious.

We are all extremely lucky that Katalin Karikó stuck with her research in spite of it all.

I, a straight person, have a question. I'm talking about homophobia in a draft blog piece, and what’s a good choice of word for the people that homophobes dislike and abuse? Has it got to the point where “queer” is respectful and appropriate? Is “LGBTQ” better? “Gender-diverse”? (I think I’m correct to think that “homophobe” has grown to include anti-trans and gender-related bigotries generally?) Who has written a really good essay on the subject? Thanks in advance.

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@timbray Queer has a lot of complicated social nuance. Avoid it. LGBTQ+ is safer in its inclusivity. Depending on audience and context, QUILTBAG may work, but it's less widely known. In addition to homophobe, heteronormative and the opposite non heteronormative may be useful. I tend to avoid homophobe and go with bigot. Or jackass . . . In general, they aren't homophobic (they can function without the debilitating effects of true phobias; they're just hate-mongers and bigots).

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar
medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@timbray I've been tracking queer since 1985 or 6. It's really interesting. In 1985 UCLA created a formal Queer Studies Ph.D. specialization, with specific requirements, reading lists, etc. Some of the faculty teaching for the program, while out and Proud, strongly objected to queer being used, This is still true for many people in the U.S. who came out before same sex marriage.

I popped into my local Apple Store today. Turns out Apple no longer sells leather anything in their stores. No more leather cases for iPhone 14 and earlier, no more leather watch straps.

They still sell the remaining stock of MagSafe Battery Packs and Duo Folding Chargers, but they yanked the leather stuff from the shelves.

Why doesn't Apple make a TV? They would own that space. Half the people I know would happily buy one, if it meant no spyware, user choice, and never buying another "smart" TV again. Even if the cost was 2x normal smart tv.

PSA: If you see a woman respond to a troll, it is never--ever--helpful to respond to her with something along the lines of "just ignore them."

She's probably ignoring 100 (or more) for every 1 she chooses to respond to. She knows that the path of least resistance is to ignore the troll & move on. She doesn't need you to inform her of that option.

A response is a conscious decision. You are not helping when you criticize (because that's what this is) that decision.

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@design_law Also, ignoring doesn't really work on modern platforms.

So after that comment from @benbloodworth I did remember that back in 2019 I took like a dozen trips up to NH when my father fell ill before he passed. When I would fly up, the iPad was packed in my one travel carry on bag and that would typically get stuffed under the seat in front of me, I’d shove the iPad into the chair pockets with charging cords, keys, etc. tight fits, lots of pressure…

This has to be the reason for all the dings. Note to self, better case / treatment for next iPad. 😢

Three years of using expensive note-taking software doesn’t seem to be making me a better thinker. I wrote about why that is — and whether a new generation of AI tools can help https://www.platformer.news/p/why-note-taking-apps-dont-make-us

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@caseynewton I think the key to useful notes is making connections, not by linking bt by writing about them. I still take a lot of notes by hand, though they end up in HTML. I learned that the point of notes is essentially to do two things: Help us remember what we have learned, not only because we can go back to the note, but by taking notes, not copying raw sources, but by extracting and syncretizing, we make the information ours. mere retrieval to add personal context. 1/2
