Context for the Starship explosion, if anyone wants it:

Itā€™s not actually a failure. It would be better if it hadnā€™t exploded, of course, but most of us expected it to explode. Rocketry is just a controlled explosion.

@adamjcook @Mark_W_White @skrishna 1. A flame trench vs 28-33 Raptorsā€¦. Serious question, would it have done much good?

  1. Repairs at the pad site are going to be costly and time consuming. If SpaceX is at all cost-conscious, they gotta do something to protect the ground equipment (and by extension, the surrounding area). Trashing the pad every time you launch wonā€™t scale.

@Mark_W_White @adamjcook @skrishna 1. Hippocratic Oath for experimental rocketsā€¦I like it!

  1. Donā€™t know nearly enough about the regulations the launch was approved under. I hope the cost lands on SpaceX.

In 2004, the web was under threat.

Microsoftā€™s browser held 95% market share, but failed to protect against viruses and spyware. The internet was becoming more centralized and less safe, stifling innovation.

So a movement began: Spread Firefox. People rallied around open-source software that fixed the problems, building and marketing it together.

Today there is another movement to break from centralized social. But it hasnā€™t had a name - until now.

Hey friends, I have a BIG CHRISTMAS SURPRISE for you! Yes, it's a holiday miracle, a Podcast with @nova! Enjoy and boost: https://www.hanselminutes.com/872/hachyderms-kris-nova-on-running-a-mastodon-server

@tojosan @shanselman Meditating on @nova 's statement about treating Twitter refugees onboarding to the same as if she were welcoming us into her own home, the reason why the mainstream media/corporate tech community can't understand Mastodon, its key distinction from Twitter, and why it can't and won't end up like any other social media platform, dawned on me.

It comes down to this (cont'd):

@tojosan @shanselman @nova

On Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snap, etc., as an integral, inseparable part of their design, as a user of that platform you are a revenue source to be mined.

On Mastodon, unless you are running your own server that hosts you and you alone, you are a guest in someone else's home.

A guest. In someone else's home.

That sets the tone of the platform, and everything else -- and I mean everything else -- flows from that.
