My Saturday wood project. It's a frame to hold a trail cam in the top right. The camera looks down at the ground. I am shooting a series of time lapse videos, recording footprints in various kinds of soils and conditions. I'm a man tracking instructor for search and rescue in British Columbia. The videos are for a new "Tracking 101" course I'm creating.

TRUMP’S CASE - A VIEW FROM AN ENGLISH LEGAL PERSPECTIVE

I am not an American lawyer, but here are some thoughts from an English litigation perspective.

Trump is adept at what he calls (or his ghost writer called) ‘the art of the deal’ - that is a transactional approach based on exploiting leverage. It is only transactional to an extent, as he will also not fulfil a promise if that also suits him.

If he follows previous patterns, he will make a bunch of noise about planning to testify and then will not.

@Snowshadow "The polls also mark a big change in the NDP’s situation. This election looked like a cakewalk, with a divided centre-right splitting the vote and a big majority almost guaranteed. Most polls this year gave the New Democrats at least a 17 per cent lead over the Conservatives.

If the two recent polls prove accurate and that gap is much smaller, the NDP faces a tougher campaign challenge than anyone expected a few weeks ago." https://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2024/04/17/Earthquake-Shaking-BC-Politics/

mlmartens,

@GottaLaff @Snowshadow

I think it's largely about the cost of housing and the poorly managed pandemic. The NDP has been in power for quite a few years and, because the party in power gets blamed for all problems, some people often think changing governments will improve their lives. BC United is a rebranded BC 'Liberals' and there's still a lot of animosity against them.

mlmartens,
@mlmartens@mastodon.social avatar

@Snowshadow @GottaLaff

Yep. PP isn't going to improve anything but people are tired of Trudeau. Same for the BC Conservatives (plus Eby tends to be a weak campaigner)

Back on the road to California. That means 📱connection is spotty, can’t often reply, but I try to read all replies & post news alerts.

I say this every time: Returning to US from 🇨🇦 is culture shock, meaning being confronted by Trump/religious signs, banners, billboards. It’s stomach churning.

It’ll be a relief to move permanently in late May.

Yes, Doomers, 🇨🇦 has its issues. So does every country in the world. But 🇨🇦 currently feels safer.

@GottaLaff Canada is safer. I'm a dual USA-Canada citizen who moved to BC 29 years ago. I haven't been to the USA for 4 years and generally don't like traveling there. I had planned to go to the St Louis area for the eclipse but changed my mind.

Last weekend I stopped to walk the dogs yesterday on Harper Mountain, just outside of Kamloops, British Columbia. The area had signs of a recent wildfire activity with many small places where fires had been extinguished but after I walked a bit further, I smelled smoke. The area had dozens of small fires burning that had been burning underground for quite some time. A very strange landscape to see the effects of a fire burning underground in the root systems.

#BCWildfire

Smoke from a fire is visible in the middle of the a forest. Pine tree trunks are visible and scattered throughout the slope. The group is grass, pine needles, and pine cones. A few small tree stumps appear in various spots along the ground.

SCOTUS already granted Jack Smith's petition to expedite the consideration of a writ of certiorari before judgment.

This was lightning fast.

Any hope Trump had that his immunity claim would slow things down is now dashed.

Also, Trump knows how to read tea leaves: SCOTUS immediately giving Jack Smith what he wants is not a good sign for Trump.

I think for fun I'll go see what Trump has to say about all of this.

    A modern version -

    On July 4, 1776, we find it necessary to break away from another group and declare our independence.

    We believe that all people are created equal and have certain rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

    Governments are formed to protect these rights and get their power from the consent of the people.

    When a government threatens these rights, we have the right and duty to replace it with one that ensures our safety and happiness.
