Just read a take that “30 years ago we’d have to wait days for pictures of the Aurora”.

I think this is a case of “mysterious old technology mythical tales”.

First of all, digital cameras or the ability to convert analog video to digital stills existed, widely, since the 1980s. For consumers digital cameras were available in 1994.

For film, the fact is that in the 80s/90s there were 1-hour photo places literally everywhere.

Newspapers had photos of current events since the 19th century.

Something on #Mastodon doesn't really make sense. Apparently, a lot of people are pro small/indieweb that is selfhosted on an potato-powered arduino in their closet but as soon as someone complains of the mastodon DDOSing websites issue they are belittled for not using Cloudflare or CDN. Despite Cloudflare being the opposite of an indieweb.

At least 14 activists were arrested today in #Cairo during a protest in solidarity with the women of #Gaza and #Sudan outside the UN Women regional office headquarters. They were reading a statement calling for an end to the occupation in #Palestine and the war in Sudan.

I look forward to updating apps installed with F-Droid. I get new bug fixes, improvements & features. I get a nice explanation of what changed. Sometimes it is great to see my tiny contribution (translation, finding a bug).

I hate updating apps that are installed through Google Play. Most keep getting bloated, change terms of service, change looks suddenly for no reason, add more advertising & tracking. They patronize me with their cute 'what's new' messages that say nothing valuable. #FOSS

I'm slowly making a thread of resources that might support people speaking up for Palestine's liberation from the state of Israel's apartheid, occupation, and genocide.

Some of these resources could also help fedi admins and mods to discuss reports. Bad faith reporting is occurring across all social media platforms in an attempt to silence calls for an end to this genocide. Moderating during a genocide is not easy.

Feel free to add ones you've found (I will block if you add IOF propaganda or Zionist-leaning resources). Infographics and easy to read resources are good. Focus is on reputable resources - created by Palestinian organisations and people, and non-Zionist Jewish groups or people that support Palestinian liberation.

I'm collating resources to increase my own competency, but I hope sharing can help other people.

Will they follow my new account? I suspect not. But why? Everyone has known for years the ideal is to build in portability — that beyond being a nice-to-have, it's actually more of a necessity to make this big project a success. Other ideas are rigorously implemented and fiercely defended. Why not this one?
