To those Americans getting offended that their president and country are being criticised for arming a genocide may I just remind you that there is something a tad more offensive than being criticised for arming a genocide which is arming a goddamn genocide. Get some fucking perspective.

Just read a take that “30 years ago we’d have to wait days for pictures of the Aurora”.

I think this is a case of “mysterious old technology mythical tales”.

First of all, digital cameras or the ability to convert analog video to digital stills existed, widely, since the 1980s. For consumers digital cameras were available in 1994.

For film, the fact is that in the 80s/90s there were 1-hour photo places literally everywhere.

Newspapers had photos of current events since the 19th century.

@thomasfuchs I saw a video documentary of how newspaper photojournalists in the US had special vans that can develop and scan films. They are transmitted through phone lines with something like an analog fax from anywhere with phone lines. I am pretty sure that was during the first half of the 20th century.

— Remote Fusion Energy Collector. A silicon based device that can convert the radiation of remote fusion sources to electricity with an efficiency between 20-30%. Might get to more than 30% with new materials. But passive energy collection with RFECs can cover domestic electricity needs, especially when combined with batteries. Formerly known as solar panels.

@Sherifazuhur so I've added two of their platforms the interactive encyclopedia of the Palestinian question and the Palestine chronology. I didn't add the institute itself as it is more focused towards political analysis. However, it seems that they do have more websites that qualify as a project that attempts to preserve memory or resist erasure under the section Digital Projects.

Rolling blackouts are disproportionately affecting poor neighborhoods & villages. The government has decided to exempt touristic areas "so as not to tarnish ’s image"

I'm concerned that there hasn't been any real discussion about the implications of July being the hottest month on record.

I have only read complaints about power cuts. The last few weeks have been really scary in terms of . For the first time I feel the threat is imminent.

This death toll doesn't align with self-defense claims and the US/UK/EU charade of calling for minimizing civilian deaths has to stop. The extremists in charge of government are acting in bad faith after the terrible Oct 7 attacks as pretext to expel Palestinians and expand the Zionist occupation.

Google search is going to suck so hard with this new AI update. We need a new search engine for the web that is run by librarians like pubmed but not run by the US gov.

(DDG is Bing which is also rubbish. Please don't suggest Kagi, it is very expensive for people living outside developed countries. Also its results suck for anything outside software and technology. Marginalia is tiny and is very biased towards the anglosphere).

I look forward to updating apps installed with F-Droid. I get new bug fixes, improvements & features. I get a nice explanation of what changed. Sometimes it is great to see my tiny contribution (translation, finding a bug).

I hate updating apps that are installed through Google Play. Most keep getting bloated, change terms of service, change looks suddenly for no reason, add more advertising & tracking. They patronize me with their cute 'what's new' messages that say nothing valuable.

Something on doesn't really make sense. Apparently, a lot of people are pro small/indieweb that is selfhosted on an potato-powered arduino in their closet but as soon as someone complains of the mastodon DDOSing websites issue they are belittled for not using Cloudflare or CDN. Despite Cloudflare being the opposite of an indieweb.
