In my timezone, it is the 22nd of June.

So, Happy to those in the Southern Hemisphere!

And Happy Solstice for those in the Northern Hemisphere in a few hours!

So here is a photo of a pass for you:

You can go up a hill, to rise above, or down to the water, to discover new depths.

Or maybe you just carry on as is.

May you make the right choice!

self, to StarTrek

A few days ago I finished the 9th book of Kirsten Beyer's Full Circle series. Just one left. I have been fighting the temptation to just read the next one in the series, one after another. I don't want my brain to get too used to fiction. I'm mostly a non-fiction reader. So I've been reading 1-3 books between each Beyer book. Architects of Infinity was really damn good, though. I still have an untouched stack of books that I will also take my time with.

How is your memory of mundane things? Phone numbers, shopping lists, names of people, addresses... etc.?

I have the problem that I can remember the most minute detail about scholarly stuff, "fun facts", etc. but I have a harder time remembering the everyday stuff.

Sometimes, I think my brain has a "not fun" filter ;)

@self

I mean, unless you need the nitty gritty for something, isn't the bigger picture enough?

I understand wanting to remember quotes, etc., but ultimately, being able to say "book soandso is about the idea of blah" is probably enough when speaking about it.

Otherwise, have you considered joining a book club? Talking about a book can really manifest it!

Did you know that apprentices to chimney sweeps were indentured servants?

The Poor Relief Act of 1601 forced each parish to apprentice kids.
The parish paid a master sweep to teach boys the job.

The would be indentured for 7 yrs.

Boys cost between 7 shillings (35p) to 4 guineas (£1.35).

The job left boys disfigured, asthmatic, & prone to “chimney sweeps' carcinoma” an often terminal .

It was the 1st cancer to be recognised as work-related.

Did you know that showed up the Brits with their ability?

In 1844, a swimming competition had two (’Flying Gull’ & ‘Tobacco’) join.

‘Flying Gull’ swam the 40m length pool in just 30 sec & won.
The front crawl he used was unknown to the .

The stroke was swiftly deemed barbaric & unrefined by the press & the Brits refused to do anything but breaststroke (& later sidestroke) until 1873.

On the upcoming 27. June, Gustav Klimt's very last "Dame mit Fächer" (Lady with Fan) will go to in Sotheby's.

They are suggesting an estimate of £65m (€76m, $82m).
That's the highest pitch ever made in !

Personally, I like this one much better than the "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" painting, or "The Kiss".

Thoughts?

@oneguynick

That make sense. I really like the Birch Forst because it reminds me of home...

...but the Dame is so lovely!

Just something I found #interesting today:

"More monks than porridge" used to be a metaphor for the limited places in public kindergartens in #China.

But the tide is turning!

A document is floating around in the #Chinese #internet sphere, showing enrollment numbers in kindergartens in #Chengdu City (Sichuan Province), that shows some places with 0 enrollment.

The #birthrate in mainland China has fallen to 1929 levels in the last 6 yrs!

The reasons are identical to those everywhere else.

Did you know that the made lenses in a that was not achieved again until the mid-20th c.?

The aspheric lenses were found in . They are made of & were probably used to magnify filigree work, to read, or to make fires.

The required to make these lenses wasn’t available until in 1637.

The first is dated to ~1050.

This means that they have been made by trial and error, likely creating a (or very few) masters of the .

This is again a photo of a Visby Lens. This time, it is used for jewelry purposes. The lens is set inside a filigree silver frame. The frame has U-shaped tendrils. Imagine a round object, with 'U' inward facing all around it. The silver frame also has some subtle engravings, like fish scales. The jewelry is a pendant and has a loop on top to weave a necklace or a cord through. The background is a glass table.

Was macht man mit unbenötigten Tests?

It's Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday & a keen detective may wonder where all my 500+ posts went!

My old server is shutting down. You can see my old posts here:

I started back then with this post:

"Did you know that to be considered wealthy in , you had to have a minimum of 1500 roof tiles?

That sort of knowledge is what I can offer you, dear Mastodon world.

Pleased to me you!"

How has Mastodon treated you so far?

And what are you currently growing? And where are the constant pictures of your cat? ;)

Cheers!

@Cosmic_owls

Well, that cat is cute enough to post a lot! Add a cute story here and there to justify it :P

Oh, you must have a bit of space then! I attempt to grow a bit too, but my garden space is very limited. Does the kitteh like the catnip?

Have fun!

@Cosmic_owls

You must have a particularly green thumb then!

I'm currently growing ALL the silverbeet, spinach, spring onion, sage, thyme, mint, parsley, lemon balm, oregano, daikon, euro-radishes, some Asian greens, a few flowers (California poppies, aloe vera, borage, lavender) ...

...and a pumpkin (probably Kent) that just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of my admittedly overgrown rosemary bush! It's winter where I am!

I'm also growing a lovely array of weeds, some of them, I eat 😁

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@Cosmic_owls

Aphids are only interested my cabbage crops... currently particularrly interested in the Broccolini that I was attempting to grow.

Downy Mildew is a bigger issue where I am, but simply diluted ACvinegar seems to fix that!

Borage is literally taking over my garden, I have to pull some ever so often :P I use the little flowers in ice cubes and spring rolls.

You should definitely try daikon - it's pretty easy to grow (just needs some downwards space) and it makes tasty soups :)
