Did you know that some days in were considered especially ?

The 'Dies Ægyptiaci' ( Days) or 'Dies Mali' (Bad Days, & the origin of the word 'dismal'), were a (usually) 2-day-a-month .

Here, shouldn't bloodlet, shouldn't sow or , & & should rest.

It is thoroughly unknown for what these days are named.

If this helps at all, in the very early Middle Ages & the late Roman Age, the dates differed...

@SkollGrimm

Interesting theories :)

But how is 2) related to the name? Do you mean like Numerology? That could be interesting 🤔

One idea is that the days were already unlucky in , but that seems unlikely as the unlucky days were fewer & different there, & the medieval ones changed over time.

@SkollGrimm

Could be!

The earliest mentions of the Days are from 354, by a Roman writer who was indeed Christian.

Always fun to speculate!

Dr. Peter died on Monday.

in 2013 & apparently a nice guy (says Brian Cox).

Also interesting Big Bang Theory inspiration.

Really?! Cool anecdote!

I'm glad he lived to see his theory proven correct ☺️

Did you know that the oldest known was also chewing gum?

tar is in its simplest form, burned birch . It forms a sticky black pitch that can be used as glue.

Evidence for (& ) use has been dated to 200k or the Old Age.

Birch tar is also a disinfectant & it has been found as a chewing gum in various locations in Europe.

One birch gum piece from 5700 yrs ago, contained a complete human of a woman.

It actually is pretty easy to make! There are instructions on Wikipedia.

Funnily enough, the neanderthals actually used a more complex method than the simplest one.

Just make sure to do so outside (& post your art project!)

. Impressive? Scary?

Personally, I'm leaning towards terrifying.

However, I could get behind medically-applied AI Robots (, cleaning, etc.).

@gregreedee

Devalue? How so? (This is a genuine question)

Nurses seem to constantly have to do things they shouldn't (e.g. lift or turn heavy patients, handle patients with violence issues, etc.). Why wouldn't it be beneficial if a machine handles those issues?

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@adrianfry

That's all great arguments, thanks Adrian!

I still don't think it would devalue nurses if robots could help them with such tasks. Perhaps in tandem? Nurse checks on patient -> identifies problem -> robot does the physical stuff -> nurse reports/fixes medical issue?

The cleaning one, I think is likely solvable. If you watch the video they are employing (or starting to) these robots in Amazon warehouses. Seems a small step.

The hostile environments are definitely a big one!

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@gregreedee

Well. I appreciate the interesting points you made.

I do believe you interpreted quite a lot into a single comment on a video however.

Especially anything about "replacing" humans.

Maybe a more nuanced and less emotionally charged conversation would be best.

Cheers

Did you know that a was banned in 3rd c. BCE for being just too ?

Hegesias of Cyrene was an from a hedonist school preceding Epicureanism.

He was so deeply convinced that our should be to avoid , that he felt that is rather desirable, as is never good.

claims that Hegesias wrote a book called ‘Death by Starvation’ that was so bleak, that many readers themselves.

It was subsequently banned.

A school friend of mine was & I was always impressed with her perseverance.

What do people in regions do about ? If there's no (or only very late) sunrise/sunset, does one not fast & do it later?

Anyway, !

Did you know that the first man-made dye was meant to cure ?

William Perkin's teacher theorised that quinine, a treatment for malaria, could be synthesized.

Inspire, the 15-year-old set out to do so. His home produced an odd sludge.

He tried to dye some with it & found it beautiful & lasting!

He got a , raised capital & soon, was wearing his invention. He got with mauve.

BONUS MYSTERY! https://researchoutreach.org/articles/mystery-victorian-purple-dye/

This is a photo of a small piece of silk fabric dyed with mauveine supplied to Queen Victoria for a dress about 1860. It shows a wooden mid-brown frame which holds a coarse homespun fabric, on which a square piece of bright mauve silk is secured. Underneath the square swatch is a coiled silk rope, also in a vivid mauve colour.

I don't usually comment on current , but the of is the result of the global community ignoring that Haitians are .

Haiti has no functional now. The situation is dire.

And what does the former U.S. Under-Secretary of State suggest?

That it's "[...] up to the United States and CARICOM to really identify who’s got to run that place [...]"

But the current situation is due to a foreign-backed government.

He forgets - again - the Haitians.

mythologyandhistory, to Bread
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

Did you know that have a LOT of about ?

In the olden days, when bread was baked at home, bad luck would seep into the bread when one cursed while baking.

And if the loaf would be placed over the table's edge, sickness would soon enter the house.

A loaf placed upside down would sway, because the poor souls would try to turn it, & if the head of the house cut the bread crookedly, then he had just lied...

:blobcatghost:
