Did you know gouda has been in production since 1184, making it the oldest category of that still uses the same ?

Despite the name, gouda is only sold in the town of Gouda but made on the surrounding the area.

To this day, you can buy gouda, in Gouda, every Thursday.

Et tu, Brute? 😭

I've been to the NL a few times but never to Gouda, which is very sad...

If you ever find a delicatessen shop or some such, look for "Gouda Holland", which is the real deal (unlike "Gouda Kaas" which is the industrial version).

Or you know, consider immigration! :NekoShrug:

During the first , Iddin-Sin, a wealthy boy from south of Baghdad, was sent away to .

As today, he worried that his clothes were not as nice as those of his classmates, & so wrote a manipulative letter to his mum.

It would’ve taken her months to spin, weave, dye, & tailor new garments.

The letter ends with: “You, you do not really love me.”

Things I've learned today:

  1. #Australia does not recognize the #Armenian #Genocide, (& I'm officially baffled).

  2. #British diplomats had known about #Hitler as a character, & the likely consequences of National Socialism about a decade before his ascent to Chancellor.

  3. #Lithuania has a dish named after the Zeppelin.

  4. The Great #Mosque of #Gaza, built in the 7th century, has been destroyed for the 6th time (2x earthquakes, Ayyubids, Mongols, Britons, Israelis).

Did you know that jewellery tastes differed between East & ?

Stone Age Europe (35k-25k yrs ago) had 9 distinctive groups of - based on their accessories.

Usually, group association is based on genetic similarities, but those can’t always explain belonging.

For example, despite being widely available, only those in the wore fox canines, while only the Westerners wore red deer ones.

They did appear to have traded for their favourites, too.

Hey there! Your list of interests seems neat, what's your favourite comicbook character?
Fav fantasy (book)?
Fav game?

And where is the Elroy picture! :D

Hope you enjoy it here!

@kiwiapple87

Elroy needs MUCH more mastodon time, with the hashtag , trust me!

I used to have a (minor) addiction to Guild Wars, like in 2006(?), sleep is overrated anyway! :D

Thanks for answering all my questions!

PS: My fav comicbook character is Marrina Smallwood, because her whole story is basically cautionary mythology.

Cheers :)

An obsession of mine is researching how countries handle threats of & insecurity.

for example, has secret locations in which it stores legumes, grains & milk powder.

has 6 mths of grain & fuel & a min. of 3 months of medicine.

In terms of water security, 9 countries in the will have extreme lvls of water stress by 2040.
But this will also be dire for , & .

What do other countries do? Educate me! :)

@jillL

I saw something like that. However, not the part about US storage!

My feeling is that Australia would be better served with a food stockpile, as water issues might make domestic grain production insufficient.

Thanks for your comment :)

Lovely write-up, thanks!

I currently live in SA, AUS. When I came here, they had water restrictions in place.

But I don't really "get" them. They have more exceptions then implimentation.

Even the tiniest hamlet has a massive, green footie field. Every house has a (usually non-native) grassed front yard (my rental included). Those dual-flush toilets would make more sense if the public ones properly worked, etc.

I suspect you are right about the mining stuff.

Well the good news is that apparently, the UK is planning a bit! https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-plan-for-cleaner-and-more-plentiful-water

The plan seems a bit too scattered for my liking (asking farmers to fix their irrigation systems for example seems risky), but it is a start.

@SkipHuffman

I was curious. I could only find actual nutritional information on a photo on Wikipedia, and the one most visible, says 70 kcal in 28g or 1 oz. Google tells me there are 16 oz in 1 pound, so 1120 kcals in total.

As a short woman, that covers me, but probably not many other people. But we're assuming dire times here, so it's probably ok for a limited time.

However, I'm not sure if it would be stomach-wise possible to eat 1 pound of cheese - even if one's lactose-tolerant!

Did you know that "Ludwig the #German" was kinda weird with his #kids?

The #Carolingian #king Ludwig, ruled East Francia for 36 years.

Within that time, he had 3 sons and 4 daughters.

Unlike other kings before & at the same time, he did not give any high positions to his sons.

He would eventually #marry all the #boys into advantageous alliances but forbade all daughters to do so.

The 3 we know of were all made to become nuns, but seemingly, not abbesses.

It's unclear why.

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

It's interesting to speculate ;)

Did you know that in #Indonesia, you shouldn't wear #green?

In the South Java Sea lives a #queen. She is a #mermaid & she likes you to respect her.

She can #control the waves, keep the #oceans stocked with fish & fishermen safe. But she demands refuge in return.

Hotels along the coastline have a room mysteriously unbookable. If you pay a price, you can enter & see that it is dedicated to the #sea queen.

If you wear her colour, green, you will become her sacrifice.

Did you know that it is legal to #marry the #dead in #France?

In 1959, 5 yrs after its construction, the Malpassant Dam regulating the Reyran river, catastrophically collapsed. A 4m high wave rushed at a speed of 70km/h through the area, destroying 2 villages.

423 people #died.

This led to many women requesting posthumous weddings, primarily to protect unborn children from being seen as illegitimate.

In 2019, a French woman married a lieutenant killed in Mali.
