Did you know that road design included features?

In the ruins of , you'll notice small white stones interspersed with the large paving ones along the extensive roads.

Those white are 'cats eyes', i.e. gems that have a single line of inclusion of crystals of another mineral inside.

Upon light reflective on them (from the ), they enable the walker to see that they are still on the right path!

Let me tell you about a juicy #history #scandal!

Feb 2014: A #papyrus containing words from #Ancient #Greek poet #Sappho is discovered - supposedly.

The papyrologist who found it makes contradicting statements.

It was found in the binding of a #mummy - did he destroy an #artefact for another?

Oh actually, it was a book binding!

Huh?

The #scholar is soon found to have illegally sold another ancient text.

He has been suspended. The 'new Sappho' is dead.

Alas.

Let me tell you about a people from #Indonesia!

The Bugis are Muslim, but their belief is strongly influenced by their ancestral #religion.

One #belief centres around the Monitor lizard. The animal is believed to have a human #soul & to be the twin of children. They are treated with respect.

Bugis also categorize people into 5 genders. Each is needed to keep the universe in balance.

Bissu, the #gender which is neither man nor woman, is the intermediary between humans & #gods.

Did you know that Jean-Paul , the literary , may have asked for money after he declined the ?

He declined.

His rejection caused a scandal (to Satre's chagrin), & the prize remained unawarded.

In 1975, the received a letter asking if the prize would still be available.

It isn't known if Satre or someone close to him sent it.

Male-defaultism in is bloody annoying.

Just because someone draws a scene in a , doesn't mean it was a man doing so or depicting one.

Every grave from the Bell Beaker Era MUST be because even when they find additions, that just means she is related to a great man or the male lost status (of course).

Archaeologist Randy Haas just assumed he found a male big game hunter in Peru in 2013. Except he didn't.

Getting real .

Did you know that a #book was banned in 3rd c. BCE for being just too #depressing?

Hegesias of Cyrene was an #ancient #Greek #philosopher from a hedonist school preceding Epicureanism.

He was so deeply convinced that our #goal should be to avoid #pain, that he felt that #death is rather desirable, as #life is never good.

#Cicero claims that Hegesias wrote a book called ‘Death by Starvation’ that was so bleak, that many readers #killed themselves.

It was subsequently banned.

Did you know that the first man-made dye was meant to cure ?

William Perkin's teacher theorised that quinine, a treatment for malaria, could be synthesized.

He tried to dye some with it & found it beautiful & lasting!

BONUS MYSTERY! https://researchoutreach.org/articles/mystery-victorian-purple-dye/

This is a photo of a small piece of silk fabric dyed with mauveine supplied to Queen Victoria for a dress about 1860. It shows a wooden mid-brown frame which holds a coarse homespun fabric, on which a square piece of bright mauve silk is secured. Underneath the square swatch is a coiled silk rope, also in a vivid mauve colour.

I don't usually comment on current , but the of is the result of the global community ignoring that Haitians are .

Haiti has no functional now. The situation is dire.

And what does the former U.S. Under-Secretary of State suggest?

That it's "[...] up to the United States and CARICOM to really identify who’s got to run that place [...]"

But the current situation is due to a foreign-backed government.

He forgets - again - the Haitians.

Did you know that have a LOT of about ?

In the olden days, when bread was baked at home, bad luck would seep into the bread when one cursed while baking.

And if the loaf would be placed over the table's edge, sickness would soon enter the house.

A loaf placed upside down would sway, because the poor souls would try to turn it, & if the head of the house cut the bread crookedly, then he had just lied...

Did you know that in 1755, after the went extinct, the director of the Ashmolean in decided that the stuffed Dodo they had was too musty & promptly burned it?

This was the very last preserved Dodo.

An appalled employee tried to save the bird, but could only rescue the head & a foot.

Consequently, we actually don't know much about the bird. Such as its diet or breeding habits.

Curious #thoughts of #CharlesDarwin on Tahitians:

"In my opinion, they are the finest men I have ever beheld [...] To see a white man bathing alongside a Tahitian, was like comparing a plant bleached by the gardener’s art to the same growing in the open fields."

He was “much disappointed in the personal appearance of the women; they are far inferior in every respect to the men.”

However "either they are not as handsome as they were said to be, or my ideas are fastidious".

Did you know that the 1st mass poisoning was fabricated?

In 331 BC, many men had died & ~200 women were put on trial.

A slave revealed the truth: the rich ladies were poisoners.

The accused were asked to drink their & promptly died. The officials declared them insane.

The is that this doesn’t make sense.
The women had no political agenda, all wealthy men had food tasters & the accused were willing to drink their potions.

Was the story just slander?
