Another horrendous decision by #Meta about #Threads: they will test paying users for posts based on their "performance".
This creates a strong incentive to publish low quality content. This is exactly what happened on #Twitter when the platform introduced its revenue sharing system: since then, the platform has been overwhelmed by grifters who publish the most horrendous posts to go viral.
Another sign that Meta is completely out of its depth when it comes to Threads.
@trumpet is there any chance of change of the blocking of the here? It should I create another account somewhere if I want to test the waters of a threads-enabled server?
@tshirtman We’re looking into how we can protect users who don’t want to federate while allowing those who do. The solution will likely be to limit Threads, while enabling authorised fetch on the server so that user-level blocks will be more rigid. I hope to post more on this soon. @o_simardcasanova
The sad story of #xy reminds me of an anecdote I experienced when I published my COVID-19 dashboard for my home region of Lorraine in northeastern France (the dashboard is still online: https://covid.aleryon.science).
A stranger vehemently attacked me because I dared to publish a free dashboard, based on open data, during a pandemic, that I created with #rstats instead of Grafana - a technology I only know by name.
The ratio the good people of Threads is giving to Marco Rubio is so hard that it's probably illegal in several countries.
Whatever the differences between #Mastodon, #Bluesky or #Threads, users on all three platforms have the same rejection of the far right and its disgusting nonsense. I love that.
(As usual, reply guys and antisocial behavior will receive an instant-block.)
Best way to describe my experience on #Threads so far:
Mindlessly scrolling for a few minutes while thinking every two suggested posts "why the hell the algorithm thinks this unhinged post would interest me?"
I have been experimenting with #Threads since it launched in Europe at the end of last year
On top of a very, very, very bad algorithmic feed, Adam Mosseri, the head of the platform, is posting at least twice a month some unhinged ideas to "improve" the platform
Don’t get wrong, auto-archiving and auto-deleting are good features
What is unhinged in the poll is how he is considering forcing the auto-archive feature to literally everyone on #Threads
Between that, and forcing the algorithmic feed to everyone, Meta seems to have a hard time considering it would be good for Threads itself to give users more control on how they use and how they experience the platform
There has been a robust discourse on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse about the threat #Meta might pose once they start federating #Threads
A significant portion of this discourse assumes that Meta is some sort of evil corporation, with a secret strategy meant to kill a alternative network with a user base so tiny that it is a rounding error compared to Meta's user base
A more likely scenario is that Meta’s danger comes from the fact that it is just another dysfunctional, poorly run organization
