Okay, hear me out. A Baking Show, but no one gets eliminated. The contestants help and learn from each other throughout the series and at the end of it they vote on who takes the top prize. Cooperation not Competition.

@NunavutBirder I don't know about competition. My daughter is visiting. She asked and I baked a cake for breakfast. That's all I need.

Bing, a man and a goat are on one side of the Potomac river. They have a boat. How do they get to the other side?

Copilot, 11:49 AM
To get both the man and the goat across the Potomac River safely, they would need to use the boat in a strategic way. Here's a simple strategy they could follow:

The man takes the goat across the river and leaves it on the other side.
2.
The man returns alone to the original side to ensure the goat doesn't wander off or get into trouble while he's gone.

German mathematician Emmy Noether was born in 1882.

One of her most significant contributions is Noether's Theorem, which establishes a fundamental connection between symmetries & conservation laws in physics. This theorem has had profound implications in fields such as quantum mechanics, particle physics & field theory. Despite facing discrimination as a woman in academia during her time, Noether persevered & made enduring contributions to mathematics and physics.

Noether sometimes used postcards to discuss abstract algebra with her colleague, Ernst Fischer. This card is postmarked 10 April 1915. Emmy Noether - Auguste Dick's Emmy Noether: 1882-1935, just after p. 58

In 5 months Israel extracted 2 hostages through bombing Gaza while killing 30,000 Palestinians.

Meanwhile diplomatic negotiations during the temporary ceasefire led to the release of 136 hostages & 0 Palestinians killed.

Yes diplomacy. No killing. Stop this atrocity.

pait,
@pait@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid Sadly Hamas broke the ceasefire and closed the negotiated route to free the hostages, leaving Israel without options.

The music director of Leipzig died in 1722, so the city council held an audition for his replacement. The winner was Georg Philipp Telemann. He went back to Hamburg, where he worked, and demanded a raise. They gave him the raise, so he stayed in Hamburg.

Next they tried to hire Christoph Graupner, one of the foremost composers of the day. He worked in Darmstadt, but the city wouldn't let him go. Back then you often needed permission from your employer to get a new job.

One of the Leipzig city councilors said: "Since the best men cannot be obtained, we must make do with the mediocre."

So they hired Johann Sebastian Bach.

pait,
@pait@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez Don’t recall anything from Graupner, but Telemann is the one classical composer I detest.

Today is the 133-year-anniversary of Wounded Knee Massacre. The US Government took their land, broke a treaty and guarantee to give them food and supplies, then sent the U.S. Army, who killed 300 Lakota including 60 women & children😓

The US Govt then:
•Awarded 20 medals of honor to the soldiers guilty of genocide
•Refused to pay reparations or build a memorial
•Waited 100 years to apologize

My grandfather, the son of a Grimsby publican, was a pharmacist who moved from Grimsby to Surrey to marry a well-to-do young woman called Nelly. He went off to war in France and Belgium, fought, was captured and spent a year and a half as a prisoner of war.

After the war he had two sons, prospered as a pharmacist, and sent them off to private school where they learned the arts and… militarism.

How do we support the Katalin Karikó's?

There's a lot of reasonable outrage today around how Katalin Karikó was treated throughout her career (full disclosure: by my employer, UPenn). Obviously a number of someones made a huge mistake by not recognizing the brilliance and potential of her work - no question there!

What I've been thinking about and I'd love to get some scenius input on: how could we, as an academic community, do better?

Here's one summary of what happened:
https://billypenn.com/2020/12/29/university-pennsylvania-covid-vaccine-mrna-kariko-demoted-biontech-pfizer/

Taking seriously the notion that 1) we want to support the Katalin Karikó's, 2) high-risk, high-reward research takes time, and 3) everyone needs to go through a job evaluation at some point, here are a few ideas:

*) Better support to help geniuses communicate (and fund) their ideas.
*) More funding for high-risk, high-reward projects
*) A longer evaluation period for individuals engaged in high-risk/high-reward research

What would you add/change?

pait,
@pait@mastodon.social avatar

@albertcardona @NicoleCRust Agree. On all points.

This may be obvious, but I recently started routinely adding "-youtube" to google searches. Greatly improves the quality of search results.

@mattblaze Good suggestion, I’ll try for Duck searches - rarely use G anymore.
