Hey fedi, I have been curious about peoples' perception regarding one specific question for a long time and would like your help finding out. Boosts very welcome.
@jasper Yes, it is. But a dystopia is a descriptor for a society. So while individual cases factor into it, I would say it's more about the big-picture structures that lead to these individual cases.
studying computers once is the worst thing you can do to yourself. you learn why choice A is better faster and actually easier to build than B, then you have to use software that picks B for no goddamn reason.
every 27 seconds. again and again and again for the rest of your life.
and if you ever say "I wish these buildings weren't all built out of cardboard and asbestos" someone affluent white dude shouts "then go rebuild the whole city yourself, femoid"
@elilla Not a femoid, but except for that this still seems to describe my IT experience pretty well. :F
Now I have projects for doing my own webframework, rendering pipeline plus UI toolkit, dynamic room lighting, PA for illegal raves and in the future audio/video streaming as well as food and energy production โ any of which might or might not ever be finished. ๐ฉ
@elilla
And I still feel like this is probably only going to stop after I have a fully open-hardware computer with the entire software stack from bios and upwards rewritten from scratch.
Electro-engineers of fedi, what #FOSS software can you recommend for developing #hardware?
Mainly looking for circuit design, but interested in anything.
I don't have fancy needs. I don't need circuit simulation. I DO need a proper component catalog and to be able to wire up two things directly without the thing bitching about overlaps or whatever.
Something forcing me to figure out the geometry of all my connections when defining what is connected to what is worse than useless for me.
@enkiv2 Yeah, I assume it's caused by my current weird setup where I had to actively tell X to use the second (older) card, because the first one doesn't have driver support in the stable release.^^
@praxeology KiCAD I tried a couple years ago and it had all the problems and essentially no part library bundled and apparently also no official place for people to upload their catalogs. Did that get better?^^
Fritzing I thought was windows-only shareware or something, but apparently there's a package for my OS, so that might be a good tool for me right now. :)
To cut down on server loads and possibly to prevent bots from trawling sites increasingly I encounter hobbled search engines. Shapeways has broken their search. I buy a lot of 3D models of math objects, I know shapeways has these models but sometimes a search like โ4D cubeโ or โ6 cellโ gives you nothing but the rather insulting suggestion shown. โklein bottleโ ignores โklienโ and just showsโฆ bottles (Iโm not asking for help, pointing out a failure) This sucks.
> Much has been said about the toxicity and wanton disregard for safety displayed by the major social media and other corporate-run platforms.
> Community-run platforms exist, some becoming household names and gaining immense popularity, but upon closer inspection they, too, struggle with creating safe, equitable spaces. Can we do better?
@rysiek I think you're already getting at the important stuff โ a lot of stuff worked, but it'd be really valuable to get some info on what doesn't/didn't work because those are the challenges we have to address.
Other than that, I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I would like to improve moderation on XMPP and could definitely use some orientation on best practices/design patterns for that โ explicitly including UX.
@rysiek Oh, also maybe some approaches for how to handle conflicts between multiple people of different disprivileged backgrounds.
It feels like this is something where moderation outcomes could be improved and I'd be very interested in hearing how different mods approach situations like that.
I am thrilled to announce that UX and UI designer @menica is joining us to improve Godot and gamedev education!
The expertise of UX designers is unfortunately still often undervalued, so we will try to share her work and show you all the things an experienced designer sees that we often miss or don't even think about.
She will work on making educational content more accessible, interactive, and interesting.
Hell, if your in browser-stuff works on my machine and you do a good thing on compute shaders together, I might just pay for education for the first time in over a decade.
And probably immediately start complaining about things like AWS hosting and copious third-party requests. ๐
If advertising worked like it did before about 1994 or so, I think weโd see fewer complaints of this nature. Adtech overplayed its hand for a quarter-century.
The thing that sucks about this, IMHO, is that it makes no room for above-board players. Doesnโt matter that it supports millions of jobs.
@alltherum Not sure if you're knowingly referencing it here, but I remember an art installation where you could crank a handle and it'd spit out minimum wage.
Vielleicht brutalstes Szenario:
Some of you sharp-eyed eager beavers spotted something unexpected in these 17th century illustrations: a couple of what appeared to be clitorises floating around next to it. But if detailed anatomical studies of the internal clitoris weren't published until the 1990s, what are clits doing in a 17th century textbook?
@vagina_museum Thanks for that thread. It baffles the mind.
If I didn't know there have been depictions of cunnilingus since antiquity, one could think it would've been an invention of the late 20th centuryโฆ ๐คจ
Then again, there's also stuff like the the Vatican hiding away all the horny art from Pompeii, which is a thing I will never, ever get overโฆ
