I’m at Guitar Merchant in West Hills for their Open Mike-two songs. I should be on in an hour. If you’re between Oxnard and Anaheim, come on by.

I wore a red checkerboard shirt. Deal closed?

At 1900 PDT, it's on https://www.cbjradio.com. Tune in and enjoy many great tracks including our "Predictable."

@kjhealy

A statistics-adjacent question.

It seems like the more people who play a given lottery, the fewer people win. So fewer people would play.

If this wasn’t a good guess, what’s a likely candidate for my bias?

On my go, you have several (seven) hours.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@hotdogsladies @kjhealy I’d offer an answer, but I’m not a cab driver.

@flargh The bigger the pool of money, the more people with hands out.

But seriously, I need to read what DOJ is alleging before I opine on merits. I saw one headline that suggested monopolization of the Smartphone market which seems not true. So that must be a poorly written headline.

Check this time stamp: in a tad over 24 hours, it’s on https://www.cbjradio.com/

Our song “Predictable” will be included.

7pm Pacific Time.

Are you like me and might not remember? Here’s a suggestion, connect now!

Hecklers suck but throwing a fit about it and walking off? That sucks even more.

Not surprised to find out John Cougar Mellencamp is a big baby, tho.

(Should be noted that the hecklers were just shouting at him to play music instead of telling rambling stories 😅 ... Can't blame people who paid $100+ a ticket to hear music wanting to, you know, hear music and not the wandering good-ol'-days recollections of a boomer.)

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@etherdiver I have a few thoughts (I’m a boomer so you may turn away now). If one wants to hear the music, stay at home and play the records. If the show isn’t what one wants, leave and do something that’s more pleasing without disturbing the artist or fellow members of the audience. There’s a balance, but as a performer I believe some of it has to be for me and some for them. Contact my booking agent and I’ll disclose my fee for a one-on-one as they please private show.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@Cyrus I cannot defend that choice on Cooder’s part. I like his music and can appreciate the disappointment and anger when he insists on us staring at the person and not the work.

And many Boomer and Gen X heroes take inexplicable pride in being jerks as they wave a banner of iconoclasm. That’s a 21st century peril to being a fan.

Was the heckler wrong in heckling? I think so. Should Mellencamp have cut the show short? I’m a damn the torpedoes, show must go on type, so I think that wrong.

And incidentally, as long as we're talking about PR. Let me clue you into something. Practically nobody in the "real world" knows what the "Fediverse" is. The ones who have heard this word probably think it's a bank somewhere.

By this time at least a significant number of people know what is, and it frequently shows up in discussions of other social media platforms. But "Fediverse" just draws blank stares, and there's NOTHING to be gained by fostering confusion by didactically insisting that people should refer to the Fediverse rather than Mastodon.

Again, PR101.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@lauren When I do band mailings and identify socials, I go Fediverse (Mastodon). Not that it matters, all the stations are staying at the ex-place. And I’m not looking for a pat on the back or chiding here. Just doing what I think makes sense.

On your larger point, it’s sort of a GNU/Linux thing isn’t it? I never called it that as it seemed pointless in the context of my conversations.

Back when some people thought emotion was inherent in the various musical keys of Western music.

Tag yourself; I'm F minor.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@KydiaMusic That there list seems pre-modern guitar.

Now “effeminate,” seen against E minor, is one of those gender-normative words that has no usefulness anymore, but E minor, when I employ it, is a key for anger or existential seeking.

Truthfully, I favor Em, G, D, F, B-flat, Am, Bm because they’re easy for me on the guitar, and some of those keys are within reach of my clarinet mediocrity and the three buttons I can use adequately on my F/Bflat/Eflat Diatonic accordion.

Suno wants everyone to be able to produce their own pro-level songs — but what does that mean for artists? BY BRIAN HIATT for Rolling Stone.

Saving something like the Butlerian Jihad in Dune, we're going to have to learn to live with generated content across many artistic forms.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@ianRobinson It’s difficult to imagine that something built on probabilities would produce other than bland common denominator recordings.

So, maybe that’s good for me and my cohorts, some of whom are extremely precise or, like me, wanting to be a bit garage-y, slightly weird, but still catchy and pop.

And some part of fan binding is about identity and not being one’s parents or older siblings.

If ever one size did not fit all, it’s with music.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@ianRobinson Honestly, were I the type, I’d bet against that startup. I don’t think the addressable market is that big. Like the Fostex B-16 deck, someone will have a hit, and there will be a bump for DIYs and pro engineers, but the number of slots for commercial success are so few, it won’t sustain and in three years, it’ll be left behind.

Question is, are the startup guys interested in advancing music or getting the buy-out from a later idiot.

@vwbusguy I’m not down in the os guts in any real sense, but I think such a thing (only one account allowed in the User group(?)) might present security issues or a system that loses a *nix/*BSD advantage, one’s system can also be a server which is implemented by multiple users and su - for admin. purposes.

Do you ever wonder if the "stupidity indistinguishable from malice" arguments you hear from a particular strain of tendentious nerds are the potty training of reactionary politics? It's a turn of phrase that gives you permission to be completely incurious about why somebody else's needs and constraints differ from our own, describing them as unworthy or subhuman instead of someone you could try to understand or sympathize with, and maybe we should ask ourselves who that makes us useful to.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@mhoye I heard it long ago and don’t recall if the source was a particular strain of tenditious nerd.

As to how I apply it these days, there’s a good question. My sense is that malice is more widely embraced than it used to be. But still, as I look at things, unintended consequences, the Peter Principle, and Murphy’s Law are far from being supplanted.
