It's ! This is the holotype skull of Diabloceratops, discovered in the Wahweap Formation. While its horns may have been for identifying other members of its species, they could have served as protection against its contemporary tyrannosaurid, Lythronax.

While plaster jackets are often necessary in order to protect fossils during transport, they can be quiet cumbersome! These photos are from when the Utahraptor Megablock was being moved out of the Museum of Ancient Life. (2/2)

A large white plaster jacket held down by yellow ties sits on multiple thick wooden beams. Behind it, several people stand aside as they wait for instruction on how to move the massive jacket.

@kandid I'm very jealous, but very glad you got the chance to see this! This is one of my dream fossils to see in person. Thanks for sharing such beautiful pictures!

Happy , this is a trilobite pendant recovered from the Baker Archaeological Site on the Utah-Nevada border. As such fossils aren't found nearby, it was likely traded to the Fremont people and possibly initially found nearly 100 miles away.

@elaterite Wonderful! I've never personally been, but I think I might just have to make a trip to it sometime. :^)

Happy , here's a lovely lineup of Allosaurus claws. Claws from the oldest individuals are on the left, whereas claws from juveniles are on the right. Even little things like claws can change as an animal grows and reaches maturity.

feeling pretty neutral toward my art lately, and i'm not sure how to get around that. i don't like it, but i don't hate it either. i feel like i should feel something more than "that sure is a drawing" whenever I finish something.

not really complaining, just observing. gonna keep experimenting with different kinds of art/mediums and see if that helps.

@mrcompletely Thank you! I'm happy to take some more advice. I've definitely been trying to keep things exciting for myself by trying to draw all sorts of things, but it seems like that just hasn't been quite enough!

@mrcompletely Sorry I got to this a little late, but thanks so much got the advice! :^) I think I do need to try a more ambitious piece soon. It's just a matter of finding some good reference material!

@gay_ornithischians Very light! You can feel their claws a little bit as they hang on, but of course they can't hurt you. I'd compare it to holding balls of crumpled up tissue paper. :^)

Happy , have a look inside of a sauropod limb bone! By taking thin sections of limb and rib bones, paleontologists can study the growth patterns and formation of bone. This in important for determining how these dinosaurs grew and aged over their lives.

A closer image of the inside of a sauropod limb bone, showing the lumpy, erratic texture of the bone. The color is a bright, rich orange intertwined with tan.

funny little mammals

Happy ! Take a look at this woolly mammoth tooth, with its grinding surface pointed to the bottom of the image. Like all three species of elephant today, woolly mammoths only had four molars. These molars would be replaced five times during their lives.
