If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.

Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

@ASP @mattblaze
The abuse people feared was someone writing a post about something, getting a lot of retweets and attention, then editing the tweet to say something reprehensible.

@mattblaze
I agree that the edit button on masto has been good.

"Bad actors are the problem, not the tools" sounds a lot like "guns don't kill people, people kill people."

That might be right, but it is still not a good way to manage problems. Limiting availability of tools is probably a good idea in many cases.

@mattblaze
You are right, social media is a subset of society, a kind of filter. I don't think you can tell who the bad actors are.

On social media the consequences of bad actors are minor compared to guns. Perhaps it is good enough to act after they reveal themselves.

In any case masto seems good so far.

I have been worrying about this for a couple of decades. My worrying has not helped. It is time to do something. I am in favor of building our own parallel universe. One step at a time.

How often do you lift weights?

@evan
The last time I lifted weights was about ten years ago.

Now I do body weight exercises and walk. I try to do each three times a week. I am happy with that, though I would like to be more consistent.

Recordings or transcripts of these should always be available as well as any body camera recordings.

    Me: “Having to choose an instance makes people not join Mastodon”

    Pundit: “They should have to choose an instance”

    Me: “They won’t. They just don’t sign up.”

    Pundit: “They should just choose an instance”

    How do you even logic

    railmeat,
    @railmeat@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thomasfuchs
    I did not give a lot of significance to choosing an instance. I choose more or less randomly.

    If it bothers other users, or potential users we should do something about it. Maybe we should choose for people who don't want to choose on their own. Maybe even randomly.

    I am not sure what that means, but I am sure I agree.
