I’m descended from Holocaust survivors. I love my people and my heritage. I will not be intimidated out of naming and criticizing genocide in our time.

All people of good conscience are obligated to oppose Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people.

@fivetonsflax
How do you define genocide?

I don’t ask that to excuse or obscure what Israel is doing in Gaza.

Running on 100 OSs is very cool. However I wonder how much extra time it takes to keep curl running on so many OSs and if it is worthwhile?

One of the more limiting things about Signal is you have to give out your mobile number to everyone. Even if it is a burner, I still don't want to advertise to the world that it's mine.

Was happy to read today that Signal is now beta testing a new username feature.

Fixing the electoral college would go a long way towards making America a better democracy and improving our country.

There is little hope of any change soon.

Israel-Hamas war: Israel says Gaza ‘cut in two’, as Jordan airdrops medical supplies to hospital

That’s a strange article. Jordan air dropping anything into Gaza seems very unlikely.

Niche gripe: pop sci books that cite a psych study and say something like "people who [x] are more likely to [y]" without mentioning the effect size, and then treat the result as if it's a statement about humanity. Like, in science a 3% increase is HUGE, but probably doesn't mean a lot about how to think about humans at large.

railmeat,
@railmeat@fosstodon.org avatar

@ZachWeinersmith
Not so niche.

In college, I used to try to explain to people that one of the things that pissed me off about racism was that it made me have to think about white people all the time, when they never had to think about me.

A fascinating paradigm shift with visionOS and Vision Pro is that the UI, the “pixels” are impossibly sharp, and is now “the real world” that is blurry.

I’m still thinking about this.

    NASA is sending a software update to the Voyager 2 spacecraft today!

    The patch contains logic to auto-recover from glitches similar to one in May 2022, when the AACS system on Voyager 1 started sending garbled data. The root cause was not fully diagnosed. The patch will be activated/tested on Oct 28. Voyager 1 will be next.

    Data will be sent at 16 bps with a 19 kW transmitter using the 70-m dish at @canberradsn.
    Distance: 20 billion km; 18:40 light hours

    X (Twitter) is starting to charge new users $1 per year to send tweets - This would seem to be a transparent ploy to collect payment methods, e.g., credit card numbers, to leverage for much higher subscription costs and services later, and ultimately push to all users. It's the classic camel's nose under the tent. Don't just say no when it comes your way, say HELL NO! -L - https://www.engadget.com/x-is-starting-to-charge-new-users-1-per-year-to-send-tweets-000925191.html?src=rss

    People are moving South in Gaza and as a result, water is now flowing through to southern Gaza. Meanwhile, Fatah is being prepared to become the new authorities in Gaza (which is why they're cooperating so well with everyone else). This can all end sooner rather than later. The region will see a vast improvement once Hamas and its allies are removed.

    Apple has a security update for iOS devices to patch two actively exploited zero-days.

    The first is a vulnerability (CVE-2023-42824) in the iOS kernel that Apple says was exploited against older iPhones using iOS 16.6 or lower.

    The second is a zero-day (CVE-2023-5217) in the Libvpx library that Google discovered last week, and Apple also ported and fixed in iOS.

    It is getting increasingly awkward that my only daily drivers are a Win10 machine and a laptop based on antiquated MacOS. I should get a simple Linux laptop.
