This Chinese-language video analysing the Malaysian state elections results is looong and there is no eng/BM subtitles but lemme summarise some of the key points that caught my attention (thread):

While I enjoyed Book 2 of the Three Body Problem, its a good reminder of how China is kinda stuck in the 20th century when it comes to views on humanity with stuff like social Darwinism and racial “character”.

Makes me wonder about the Netflix adaptation. I don’t mind the casting of non-Chinese actors for Chinese characters but so much of the worldviews and contexts in the book are VERY Chinese. Wonder how much of the cultural nuances will be lost or modified for western sensibilities.

The Ming Dynasty fans phenomenon (Chinese equivalent of Roman bros) is pretty baffling especially considering that, even if you are an ethnonationalist who wants to exclude the dynasties ruled by non-Han ethnicities, there’s still the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, and Song Dynasty to choose from! Why choose a dynasty founded by a megalomaniac who decided that he didn’t need prime ministers, ruled by despots, and famous for its corruption?

So there’s a Mona Lisa Multiverse of Madness meme/trend on Reddit where ppl create AI-generated images of some dude from their country of choice stealing the Mona Lisa after it was stolen by some guy from another country. I decided to join in the fun by creating a Malaysian version. Here’s my contribution for your enjoyment. 🧵

Is Alleluia Cone a personalification of the white and liberal side of London, who fell heads-over-heels over Gibreel (read: the aloof & fiercely traditional segment of Muslim immigrants) who never sincerely loved her & only exploiting her love (which it’s also implied at one point is not as sincere as it seems)?

about the Great Male Renunciation

“The Great Male Renunciation is the historical phenomenon at the end of the 18th century in which Western men stopped using brilliant or refined forms in their dress, which were left to women's clothing. Coined by psychoanalyst John Flügel in 1930, it is considered a major turning point in the history of clothing in which the men relinquished their claim to adornment and beauty.”

Translation of previous boosted Chinese toot:

"It's kinda exhausting. It’s not the first time where a new wave of online friends move to Mastodon because it's getting tough online within the Great Firewall. When they do, lots of new folks show up, but after a week, only half stick around, and after a month, hardly 10% stay.“

I used to be the one telling my Chinese friends that young Malays and urban Malays are not more “open minded” & PN will benefit from Undi18. Guess I’ll also be the one telling them that no, conservative Muslims don’t love the monarchy and PAS supporters will be the ones calling for the abolishment of the institution.

I’m sure that our relative success is based on various unsustainable stuff like over reliance on foreign labor but it’s amusing to see how everyone in the comments be like:

“Must be because of oil!”

“It’s because of the Chinese population”

“They are close to Singapore”

Yeah rightttt brown-skinned people cannot have success without the above

When you see that your chili padi is bright red with no hints of green, you know it’s going to pack a real punch.

(Not sure what type of chilli is this but it’s quite commonly used in Malaysian restaurants and quite a bit spicier than regular Bird’s Eye Chilies)

Souvenirs to buy in Malaysia

We Malaysians might not be aware but apparently, we’re famous for our chocolate. Every day, an endless stream of buses filled with China tourists make their stop at chocolate factories that locals don’t even know exist haha.

Other must-buy Malaysian products according to this China YouTuber: Milo powder, instant white coffee, instant teh tarik and instant cooking bak kut teh.
