A few brave Singaporeans unfurled this banner in front of the iconic Marina Bay Sands, in a country where any public protest is illegal without prior approval and approved protests are only allowed at one park (and the authorities already said all registered protest applications relating to Gaza will be denied)

If they were foreigners they would almost certainly be deported. As citizens they’ll definitely see some legal action

@skinnylatte I did my master's thesis on the internet and democratization in Malaysia and Singapore, and some of the ways the PAP government went after individuals were WILD. The education minister sued a college student studying abroad for libel because he criticized a policy on his blogspot.

Finally got the baby to sleep, and turned off my phone's playing of the Gambler on repeat. Unfortunately, I am too far away to turn off his dad's phone, which is also playing The Gambler on repeat. It's been the baby's favorite song/the only thing that makes him stop crying since the summer. It is a testament to Kenny Rogers songwriting ability that I do not hate The Gambler.

@mariyadelano There was this spyware that would attach itself to your browser and pop up ads that weren't connected to the site you were visiting. (Often connected to sketchy apps we downloaded to, for example, illegally download music).

The detransitioner whose story formed the heart of PragerU's 20 minute "documentary" which they promoted with a $1 million ad buy on Twitter yesterday wants everyone to convert to Catholicism.

We got a statement from Strongin for this- and found some evidence that directly contradicts what she claimed to us, which was that she didn't detransition because of religion.

Awesome article by @hbuchel discussing why the current state of the web isn't great.

Over the past decade, I've noticed a decline in web design that's a tad disappointing. It feels like a lot of overly serious "developers" have prioritized function over aesthetics to such an extent that functionality has been compromised due to a lack of visual appeal.

Nowadays, almost every website seems to have the same generic look - a sea of whiteness with that corporate Memphis vibe, attempting to showcase diversity but lacking imagination and creativity.

I genuinely believe that one contributing factor to this issue is the increasing centralization of the web, where the same gatekeepers consistently make the same mistakes.

Although the Fediverse currently lacks good web design, I have high hopes that its open-source nature will attract incredibly talented web designers who will bring innovation to the table. I really wish for a visually pleasing and user-friendly social web to thrive.

@atomicpoet @hbuchel There's so much truth here, I'm not even sure which I want to laud in this smallish comment box. The whole "code is macho" phenomena. The lack of technical knowledge in "macho" coding areas. I feel like part of the reason the web looks the same is people who don't understand the DOM and CSS rely on libraries that abstract this knowledge away. When React and React adjacent libraries stop being the hotness, folks will struggle because they don't understand the underlying tech

This has mostly been reported as "trans women banned from women's chess" but it's much more sinister. (as if it weren't already.)

ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.

If you play or know anyone who does take a stand on this. It's ugly.

This month is my 5th wedding anniversary. My wife and I grew up in conservative Abrahamic faiths in Southeast Asia and, somehow when we found each other all hell did not break loose; our families accepted us, and now we are able to build a life we could have only dreamed off, far far away from home.

The Kiwis married us, and the Californians gave us a home. We are thankful. Immigrant life has been immensely difficult, but ultimately worth it.
