Most people getting EBT cards do work and they usually work at low paying jobs like Walmart or fast food places, or factory or maintenance jobs.

But even if they don’t, we should be feeding hungry kids. Republicans all over the country have been rejecting programs like this. Democratic governors create and expand them.

Press Release: Gov. Evers Announces Wisconsin is the First State to Receive Federal Approval to Help Feed Kids and Families During Summer Months:

Kids need to be fed. For the benefit of the hard of thinking, I'll repeat that. Kids need to be fed.

In any civilised society, one of the key roles of government is to ensure that kids get fed, regardless of who their parents are or what they may have done.

I've felt two earthquakes in London, where we don't get earthquakes. So NE USA is amusing.

1# was in a meeting, about three floors up in a building. Everything swayed briefly. I thought it was me until I saw from the expression of the guy opposite that he'd felt it too.

2# was in the early hours. Husband was still up. House rattling woke me. And, being woken, I needed the loo. On my way back, husband asked why I'd been so noisy. I replied that it wasn't me, it was the earthquake.

How have I never heard of this??? It's gluten free!

Masa Tiganitas is Sephardi Matzah Brei, But Much Better

Baklava meets matzah brei in this delicious Greek dish for Passover.

By Rachel Ringler | April 14, 2020

"...In Sternberg’s version, matzah squares are soaked in milk, dipped in a combination of egg and yogurt and then fried in oil. As opposed to matzah brei, or bumelos de masa, the matzah in Sternberg’s recipe is not crushed. They are left whole, dunked, fried and then sweetened with a drizzle of honey or arrope (a syrup made of grapes), and topped with a sprinkling of walnuts. Think fried matzah meets baklava. I am in love.

Recipe reprinted with permission from “The Sephardic Kitchen” by Rabbi Robert Sternberg..."

Sounds nice, but it's not gluten free unless you use gluten free matzah (which I assume exists although I've never come across it).

Q. how much economic advantage does UK get by speaking english.

Other countries gain economic developmental advantage from the range of people with english proficiency.

So turning that around: does the UK's 'natural' speaking of English mask or reduce (some) economic deficiencies that would otherwise be problems?.

Thought experiment: if the UK did no speak the globe's second language what would be the implication for its economic development?

Typical garment construction requires a designer to build a 2D pattern, then cut and sew from 2D fabric – yielding excess waste, additional cost/labor and bulky seams that don’t always follow human anatomy. New innovation in 3D knitting – akin to 3D printing - has allowed fabric variation and standardized 3D shaping - however customized shaping of knitted garments to fit anyone’s unique body or style hasn’t been possible …

Erm, textile was one of the first industries to be automated. Spinning jenny, power loom, all that stuff from the early 19th century. Textile is also a very powerful source of algorithmic thinking - jacquard looms, knitting patterns in general.

Woven fabrics are 2d by nature, so you have to work with that. Whereas with knitting, the ability to shape 3d surfaces is inherent. Just add/lose stitches as needed.

Since I've talked a lot about change today, I'll ask a question about it:

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@RickiTarr

I've changed a lot of things. The one I give thanks for every day is all the physiotherapy I had in my 40s (should have done it much sooner) to correct the (very common) postural imbalance I'd had since childhood.

I can and do now actually use my glutes properly instead of my quads and it makes all the difference in the world.

"The eye strain is real.

Well yes and there is a more basic problem with mass adoption of VR. Even before you get to eye strain, motion sickness or arm fatigue...

Who the heck wants to strap a mask to their face? Sure, there might be some specific purposes for which some people will perceive that as worthwhile. Meetings certainly aren't one. I can't personally imagine anything that would make me want to do that.

I reckon it'll always be a minority thing.

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
  • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
  • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
  • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

Pretty sure that in the UK if you dial 999, ask for an ambulance (rather than police or fire service) then say it's for a road traffic accident, the police are always called out as well. They may need to clear the road and make it safe for other users, quite apart from the possibility of criminal charges.

The big difference is that here the police don't routinely carry guns.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

Hm, I said you seemed to be getting a bit desperate... but I hadn't expected you to confirm that so conclusively.

I mean, WTAF. You know I'm not Christian. It's pretty easy to discern I'm not American.

I started this conversation by saying the religion atheists don't believe in is invariably Christianity (because they know fuck-all about any other). So.. thank you for proving my point.

regordane,

I assume you do realise that the reason Israelites referred to the Philistines as "the uncircumcised", and collected their foreskins as trophies, is because all other local desert peoples practised circumcision. The coastal Philistines were the weirdos because they didn't.

Oh, no, you didn't? That's because you're ignorant as fuck.

As I said, the only religion atheists understand (and reject) is Christianity. They know fuck all about anything else.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

And as for the Akeida... there are many centuries of deep wisdom about what it means and what we can learn from it.

Only know-nothing literalist Protestant Christians come up with rubbish like yours.

Please if you want to criticise reformed Christianity, go ahead. But you know NOTHING of other religions so don't assume they are the same.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

Yes, I follow you because sometimes I need to know what harm people are doing. You're as ignorant as fuck and yet you call me a moron?

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

You don't even know what a religion is.

"Establish things as fact"? Erm, nope. Not mine, buddy.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

I assume you're aware that there are well-established religions that don't even have a god?

Or that there are religions that don't assume that morality is dependent on belief?

Oh, no, I guess that would be too much to hope for.

You are so fucking ignorant.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

If some atheists have been exposed to the idea that religion can be more diverse, flexible and accommodating than the fundamentalist Christianity they have rightly rejected... I'd see that as a win.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

Sounds to me that you're getting a bit desperate now.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

Religious people other than fundamentalist Christians have spent three thousand years discussing this *conundrum. And learning deeply from doing so.

But yeah, fundamentalist Christians waltz in and assume it should be taken at face value. And atheists follow their lead.

*I once gave a sermon. On the akeida. I'm not a Talmud scholar. But even I know enough to find many different ways of learning from this superficially challenging story. A bit like the Greek myths..

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

I don't believe in a God who tells me to do things. I don't believe in blasphemy.

So I really can't answer your question. Except to say that you persist in not understanding the premise. Or possibly, if I did start to think that God commanded me in such ways, I should seek psychiatric care and probably anti-psychotic medication. Because that's the only way I can imagine such a scenario.

I am the religious one here.

regordane,
@regordane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jeffowski

I'm not trying to convert anyone (that's against my religion).

But I like exposing atheists to the idea that the (Christian) religion they have rejected is a narrow and restricted concept, which many real religions don't follow.

“Historically, only 98 Black women have been confirmed as lifetime federal judges, and of that number, Biden has appointed 35, or nearly 35% of the total number."

There are hundreds of federal judges retiring that the President will be replacing in the next four years. President Biden has been and is committed to a judiciary that represents our diverse population.

In milestones, Black women from South Carolina and Indiana confirmed as federal judges:

regordane,

@TonyStark

I'm not American. But patronage (as we call it here), including appointing judges, is among the most important powers of the incumbent regime. And it persists beyond the lifetime of that regime. We've seen this with Roe v Wade overturned.

The US president's power to appoint judges is one of the most compelling reasons to vote for Biden, even if you're lukewarm about him in other respects.
