“If I saw Comrade Chow on her bike, I would steer into her.”

The fact that someone would feel comfortable saying this out loud to a stranger is horrifying, but not surprising: anyone who rides a bike has stories of real malice and aggression from drivers.

If you care about the planet, please make sure you sit down before you start reading this post about ExxonMobil.

So.

The CEO of ExxonMobil just said this in an interview: "We’ve waited too long to open the aperture on the solution sets in terms of what we need, as a society, to start reducing emissions."

https://fortune.com/2024/02/27/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-interview-pay-the-price-for-net-zero/

Who's the most influential voice on climate change? Who's to blame for inaction on climate change?

According to the CEO of ExxonMobil, it's environmental activists.

No, really:

"Frankly, society, and the activist—the dominant voice in this discussion—has tried to exclude the industry that has the most capacity and the highest potential for helping with some of the technologies."

Oh, and the CEO of ExxonMobil also apparently thinks consumers are to blame for climate inaction:

"Today we have opportunities to make fuels with lower carbon, but people aren’t willing to spend the money to do that."

Gets better.

He thinks unnamed 'people who generate emissions' should pay for it. (Rather than, say, major transnational oil companies.)

"People who are generating the emissions need to be aware of [it] and pay the price. That’s ultimately how you solve the problem."

https://fortune.com/2024/02/27/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-interview-pay-the-price-for-net-zero/

Worth including a quick reminder here that Exxon-Mobil made a US$36 billion profit in 2023: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exxon-beats-estimates-ends-2023-with-36-billion-profit-2024-02-02/#:~:text=HOUSTON%2C%20Feb%202%20(Reuters),higher%20oil%20and%20gas%20production.

Not gross revenue.

Profit.

So, remind me again. Who knew about climate change before most of the public?

"Exxon was aware of climate change, as early as 1977, 11 years before it became a public issue... This knowledge did not prevent the company (now ExxonMobil and the world’s largest oil and gas company) from spending decades refusing to publicly acknowledge climate change and even promoting climate misinformation."

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/

And just who, exactly, stood in the way reducing emissions all these years?

"ExxonMobil executives privately sought to undermine climate science even after the oil and gas giant publicly acknowledged the link between fossil fuel emissions and climate change, according to previously unreported documents...

"The new revelations are based on previously unreported documents subpoenaed by New York’s attorney general as part of an investigation into the company announced in 2015. They add to a slew of documents that record a decades-long misinformation campaign waged by Exxon, which are cited in a growing number of state and municipal lawsuits against big oil."

Looking for suggestions on how one could integrate a 3-2-1 style back up strategy when local space is constrained. Does Nextcloud function with removable local media well?

Nextcloud server is accessible via SMB as well, though I’ve had some concurrency issues with Nextcloud when it isn’t the owner of hot data.

Pricing heat pump water heaters, I will not DIY this since it involves gas lines on the old convention tank plus city inspections. Let the number crunching and hand wringing commence.

#heatpump #greenenergy

rexbron,

@simplenomad I had a Rheem ProTerra installed this summer. Three adults, one child, no issues with hot water.

Main installation challenge was the electrical panel needed to be replaced. We had 200a service but the old panel was completely full, no room for the extra breakers.

If you can, look into waste heat recovery tubing for your main drain. Helps if you have people who like to take long showers.

rexbron,

@simplenomad My solar system is net metered with the grid, so it just feeds the panel and any excess flows back to the grid.

One of the reasons I dislike digital camera-based film scanning rigs: I have access to a Fuji Frontier (and a Noritsu LS-600, as well as a Imacon 848) at my local darkroom. It’s so.. nice

I never want to own or maintain one of these, but I want to keep using them. Auto film advance, and no edits after scanning even for JPGs!

@skinnylatte @jake The computer in your photo is virtualizing XP on linux, which is probably the only sane way to do it.

    rexbron,

@Alon This describes well all the public private partnership issues that we’ve seen in under 's contracting model.

Conservative politicians have sold the fantasy that if we pay a little more upfront, the private contractors will take on all the risk of cost overruns. All that happens instead is both parties end up in court and so far, the public has had to pay extra anyways.

@RM_Transit As someone who grew up in Scarborough and rode two buses, the subway, and the RT to get to school, I’d say it has to do with “Shinny Objects” and ideas of transit mode equity. Better bus service and infrastructure doesn’t get people excited like a subway or new trains.

    rexbron,

@RM_Transit Absolutely! To expand on the idea of mode equity as I see it (not that I agree), the EELRT would give more people the chance to ride a train, instead of the bus, which is more fair, as other parts of the city gets trains.

This idea of mode equity doesn’t concern itself with metrics like journey times, it’s about getting a “fair share” of infrastructure dollars relative to the rest of the city.

Im also hopeful that with GO expansion and cofares, the TTC /2

@RM_Transit you make great points that it’s not all or nothing. We place way to much importance on economies of scale instead of selecting modes and infrastructure to meet service goals first.

Public transport isn't supposed to make money. It's not even supposed to break even. It's supposed to lose money and to be financed and extended from general taxes because it gives back way more than mere money.

And all the politicians know this because they keep building and maintaining streets for free

    rexbron,

@jay_peper Any time I hear complaints about buses running empty, I think of all the firefighters not fighting fire every minute of the day. Do we think we should cut the number of firefighters so they are always working?

You pay for the service to be there when you need it, regardless of if it is needed right now.
