Are any folks who are grossed by microwaved water willing to do a double-blind taste test?

Prepare 2 cups of with everything identical except how the water is heated. Have someone split each of those 2 cups of tea into 3 cups each, so you have 6 total cups to taste from. (Don't use the microwaved cup, it'll be warmer than the rest.) They record which tea is in which cup, then leave the room so they can't influence you during testing.

Can you tell the difference?

Compare:

Streaming service: $10-15 per household for 0-720 hours of entertainment. Watch 1hr/day = 30-50 cents per hour of entertainment.

Video Games: Most of my time is City of Heroes & it's free. Steam library ranges from never played to 4 cents/hr, to 30 cents, to $1/hr for smaller games.

Movie theater: $10-20 per person for 2-3 hours of entertainment. Result: $3-10/hr. (Plus snacks.)

There are many reasons far beyond cost why I don't go to theaters anymore but yeah. It's expensive.

You can use a magnifying glass to symbolize looking for something.

What would you use to symbolize having found it?

Has anyone looked into prosecuting Kristi Noem for animal cruelty?

Serious question.

Isn't this a crime? In Florida you're definitley not allowed to just kill your dog, even if it is YOUR dog and no matter how it's behaving. Even if it obviously has rabies, you still have to call animal control. So.. how has she not been arrested for admitting to this crime?

sapphire,
@sapphire@darkfriend.social avatar

@dalfen @CStamp

Per the page I linked, the law states "any person."

Title 40. Animals and Livestock. Chapter 40-34. Dog Licenses and Regulation.
40-34-1. Killing of dog lawful when disturbing domestic animals.

It shall be lawful for any person to kill any dog found chasing, worrying, injuring, or killing poultry or domestic animals except on the premises of the owners of said dog or dogs.

Source: SDC 1939, § 40.1312.

@dalfen

Okay so I found this page:
https://www.animallaw.info/statute/sd-dogs-consolidated-dog-laws#s34_1

And apparently not only is it LEGAL to kill a dog that is harassing poultry, a person can be FINED for "harboring" an animal that does so.

Holy fuck, shame on you South Dakota!

(Like yes, protect poultry too, but this is not the way!)

I also don't know how she skipped right over the option of rehoming the animal with someone who can provide a better environment for all that energy. Nope, straight to murder. Makes me wonder how she punishes her kids.

I used to let my phone notify me of every new email & social media notification. I've come to view this as unhealthy & no longer allow anything to notify me (except alarms, reminders, calls, & texts obvs).

Random interruptions to our attention aren't good for us, even if we don't drop what we're doing to respond. I've tried to minimize other people's ability to randomly interrupt my attention as well. (I mute most people on Teams at work.)

Attention is currency; spend yours wisely.

Don't beat myself up. I just missed a detail while my ADHD meds were wearing off. It doesn't reflect on me as a programmer. It's a simple mistake that's easy to fix.

Treat yourself as you would your best friend, not you worst enemy. Be forgiving and patient with yourself, not mean and critical. I need to get better about this too.

Ugh. I worked around 30% more last year and drove around 500 extra miles last year for just under $1k extra gross. So my adjusted gross dropped from $5k to $2k. Lovely take home pay for a job that's absolutely not a scam.

It always amazes me how many people in cities drive big ass vehicles. I drive an SUV. I live on a dirt road, drive dirt roads the majority of the time, and have to have four wheel drive to get up the road in the winter. What is their excuse?

I (you) could watch YouTube videos about _____ for five hours straight

sapphire,
@sapphire@darkfriend.social avatar

@tylermumford

Science!

I already do watch a couple hours of YouTube every day. Content includes: science, general news, food, nail polish swatch & reviews, watercolor painting tutorials. (All nonfiction.)

My husband also watches a lot of YouTube. Discussions of Magic the Gathering & Legends of Runeterra, video essays about various anime series.

We watch very little "regular" TV. Wheel of Time, Star Trek, a small number of other shows here and there.

I need help. A couple days ago a mystery started coming from my kitchen and it's driving us all nuts. According to a spectrogram it's at 4,086 Hz. It hasn't stopped for days. It's clearly the kitchen because enough walls or distance block it. We've tried unplugging all the appliances we get to to no avail.

sapphire,
@sapphire@darkfriend.social avatar

@o76923

Eek, that sucks! I have no idea if a bad outlet could do that. My first thought is theres an appliance you forgot to unplug when checking. Toaster or toaster oven? Coffee pot? Fridge? Maybe it's the light fixture?

It's okay to be rusty and out of practice. The point of fun little side projects is to get the rust off.

It doesn't have to be a perfect result that's completely efficient, expertly architected, modular, extensible, and all that. It just needs to make silly pictures of kitties.

I've attempted to tackle this project a couple times, but this is the first time I'm somewhat satisfied with the result. I used the video linked below as tutorial. My first time without a line drawing as a guide. This will be part of a series; I wonder if anyone will recognize what I'm going for? It'll hopefully be obvious when I finish more in the series.

Now that I know people recognize what I'm doing, I can finally let everyone else in on it: I'm illustrating novel titles to help me remember them & their order. So far they are:

Book 0: New Spring
1: The Eye of The World
2: The Great Hunt
3: The Dragon Reborn

Tonight once the sun goes down, I'm gonna try to remember to go out and count how many stars are visible. Because yes, there is so much light pollution here that even if it's a clear night, the stars will be very countable.

My estimate is six. I'll update yall later! And I'd love to hear from you, are the stars in your sky countable?

Informal poll & thought experiment:

I think it's reasonable to pay (price range) for (object) and then I shouldn't have to buy another one for (number) years.

Objects:

  1. new smart phone made by a major manufacturer
  2. new high-end personal computer for gaming or media/editing
  3. new personal/family vehicle that has some comfort options but isn't top of the line or a sports car

My parents used to play a dice game called Cosmic Wimpout when we had guests. One rule of the game is called "Futless Rule." Another is called "You may not want to but you must."

Years later, they misremembered the rules and in our house, "Futless rule" came to mean "you may not want to but you have to." Yes, they both conflated two separate rules into one and botched the wording on the second.

So anyway, whenever I have to do something I don't wanna, I say "Futless rule!" and do it anyway.
